I've wanted a wood shop forever!! We just purchased a new house that has a 20 x 30 detached garage. I can see my dream of having a wood shop starting to come true as I carefully plan the layout and study which "tools" to purchase. I look forward to the help that I know I will get here as I depend on Lumberjocks to mentor me as I progress in building my wood shop and my wood working skills.

A little late welcome to lumberjocks, but welcome. How’s the shop coming? Wife and I are possibly moving to Nashville soon. Look fwd to getting out of the concrete jungle and building a proper size shop. I’m ken, thought I’d say hello. Cheers

HI Ken,

Thanks for your welcome. Glad to hear I will be getting a new neighbor soon! Nashville is a great place to live. I live outside of Nashville in the burbs in the Providence area of Mt. Juliet just east of down town. I’m retired now so I do not have to deal with the challenging traffic going to and from downtown.

As to progress with my shop, my wife required bypass surgery and a heart valve replacement about 2 weeks ago. She was in perfect health with no indications otherwise (or so we thought). All went well and she is home now and getting better everyday. However, as you can well imagine, I stay close by making sure she gets everything she needs.

I have made some progress on the shop prior to my wife’s illness. I went into “bargain hunter” mode looking for deals on used eqpt. I got lucky and have managed to accumulate a miter saw, a scroll saw, a benchtop planer, belt/disk sander, router table, and various hand tools, drill/drivers, and misc. I’ve watched Harbor Freight for sales on their clamps and have picked up several different sizes. I also took advantage of a sale at Grizzly and purchased a new GO715P table saw. So, I’m getting there!!

My next challenge will be to make adjustments to the garage electrical. Now, I have only 2, 15 amp circuits with plenty of room in the box for expansion. The wiring is accessible since I have open stud walls. I will just rewire and improve to 20 amp circuits (and maybe add more). I would like to add 220 amp but I’m not sure if or when the budget will allow that upgrade. As of now, everything I have will run on 110. I am not an electrician – so I’m limited in what I can do myself.

Let me know when you are in the area and maybe we can meet up. Do you know what area you will choose to live?

Mike
