Hurray! This was a fun one as I have never carved a crest rail, so that was something new. Multiple woods and paint. Now I’m going to go sit in it and relax!!

This will most likely be the last of my series. the first picture is of #5, the second picture is of #4 & 5 together on a shelf in front of my window. It appears I like to take beautiful wood and poke holes in it.:-) Black limba again, and about 8 inches in diameter. Unfortunately one cannot really see all the detail in these pieces,i.e. varying levels of erosion on the wood, because I only have a pocket digital. it does ok generally, but it is not good if one needs tiny details recorded. Hope they interest you & you enjoy seeing them. I’ve had a ball making them

Tho, it has the ‘erosion” face as before, this one the “slots” go all the way thru. I like the wood, black limba, a whole heck of a lot, as it has great color variations.

After watching a PBS program on volcanos, I thought how much it looked like the erosion left by lava as it raced downhill to the sea. I like both visions. Hope you enjoy these.

So many folks have asked for a tutorial, and I have hesitated as my original turnings & methods can be very dangerous, and I wanted no one to get hurt.
This one can be done fairly safely as it is not too eccentric.
Step 1: 1/2 thick wood cut in circle
2: measure 1” from center each direction and drill a 1/2 inch hole through for a 1/2 bolt that you put in your chuck
3; Choose either hole and use a parting tool and cut 1/2 way thru all the slots you want
4; take piece off lathe & turn around to other side & reinstall on other hole on lathe
            5. part 1/2 way thru again and when you see light stop
             6. cut all the slots you want
7,Get ready to hand sand & pick out hanging chads :0

Basically that’s it..
Hope this helps ya’ll
Michelle

I liked it so much that I had to make one for my own “braggin” wall. To get this glorious color I put the cherry piece out in the sun and then used a very light coat of UV protectant varnish. I have used the UV protectant stuff for years on purpleheart, cherry & other light reactive woods, and it has helped the wood keep color much longer. (also keep your pieces out of direct sunlight) The center is copper. Hope you enjoy

This is a new direction in my negative space designs. This project has raised “sculpted” volutes. For a first attempt I am modestly pleased with it. my usual negative space designs have been very thin, between .350-.375 thick. Because of the raised volutes, this is nearing .500 inches thick, and the majority of the height is the volutes. Shedua, about 8 inches in diam
Let me know what you think of this new concept. thanks
