While alcoholism is a devastating condition that can destroy lives, some people who struggle with it manage to keep big responsibilities and stressful jobs. From the outside, these so-called high-functioning problem drinkers seem to have it all together. They can drive nice cars, live in great neighborhoods, and make a significant income.

Just because they're high-functioning does not mean that they're immune to the effects of alcohol. They are still in danger of hurting themselves and others around them. For instance, a pilot nursing a hangover, a surgeon with unsteady hands, or a banker managing large sums of money are each at-risk of causing horrendous disasters if they stay on their dysfunctional course.

Below are a few signs that can really help in identifying these time bombs:

1. They drink rather than eating.

Problem drinkers will commonly replace meals with a couple of drinks, lose interest in food completely, or use mealtime as justification to start consuming alcohol.

2. They can wake up without having a hangover, even after a number of drinks.

Consuming alcohol regularly over an extended period of time can cause the body to become dependent on alcohol. Commonly high-functioning drinking ">alcoholic s successfully drink a great deal without having the same hangover that plagues the occasional drinker.

3. Not drinking makes them cranky, anxious, or uncomfortable.

If an alcoholic is forced to avoid consuming alcohol, his or her body often reacts adversely, as they are dependent on the sedative effects of alcohol. Abrupt quitting can trigger anxiety, nervousness, perspiration, a quickened heart rate, and even seizures.

4. Their behavior patterns transform dramatically while under the influence of alcohol.

When they drink, problem drinkers may change noticeably. For instance, a typically pleasant individual may become aggressive, or make careless choices.

5. They cannot have just two drinks.

alcohol dependence has a problem stopping, and may even finish others' drinks. Alcohol will never be left on the table, and there is always an excuse for one more round.

6. Time spans of amnesia or "blacking out" are typical.

Many problem drinkers will participate in activities that they have no memory of the following day. They may not appear extremely drunk at the time, but they're unable to remember activities that occurred.

7. Attempts to discuss drinking behavior are met with aggression and denial.

When faced with matters involving their alcohol consumption, alcoholic s will generally retreat to denial or hostility, making discussion difficult.

8. They always have a good reason for why they drink.

If flat denial or aggression is not the chosen mode of evasion, most problem drinkers will have a seemingly reasonable explanation for their behavior. Stress and anxiety at the workplace, troubles at home, or an abundance of social functions are common excuses to explain their destructive behavior.

9. They hide their alcohol.

Many problem drinkers will drink alone, or sneak drinks from a bottle in a desk or in their car. This sort of hidden drinking is a tremendous red flag and there is no other explanation for their actions other than alcohol addiction .

Let's try to keep our world productive, safe, and sober by keeping our eyes open for dubious actions to get these troubled colleagues, family, and neighbors the help they need.

Indications of a High Functioning Alcoholic

From the outside, these so-called high-functioning alcoholic s appear to have it all together. They can drive cool cars, live in great neighborhoods, and make a substantial income.

Simply because alcohol dependence -functioning doesn't mean that they're immune to the effects of alcohol. A pilot nursing a hangover, a surgeon with unsteady hands, or a financier managing large sums of money are each at-risk of causing horrible disasters if they stay on their destructive path.
