Shelix cutterhead for jointer

Shelix cutterhead for jointer

64 days ago by Jim | 9 comments »

I’ve had my Grizzly 8” G0490 jointer for about 5 years. I’ve been very happy with this jointer. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this same jointer again. About 2 yrs ago I decided to modify it by replacing the cutterhead with a Shelix head. I was working with some highly figured koa and wanted to maximize the utilization of this expensive wood as much as possible by not losing any to tearout. Many people want to know if the helical heads are worth the money. Short answer...

Book: Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work

Well, I’m not as good a writer as Publisher’s Weekly so I’m going to defer to them for this description of this book. Also there’s a review of it in the June 22, 2009 issue of the New Yorker magazine. “Philosopher and motorcycle repair-shop owner Crawford extols the value of making and fixing things in this masterful paean to what he calls “manual competence,” the ability to work with one’s hands. According to the author, our alienation from how our possessio...

Miterset Standard

Miterset Standard

I saw a review of this and decided to order and give it a try. It’s a fine product—accurate and simple to use. My kind of tool! What is it? It’s a jig that “sets any miter gauge to precise angles”. It’s pretty self explanatory in its use but the extra cool feature is the aluminum “step bar” that’s provided that allows the jig to set any 1/2° angle between 0° and 55°. Simple and time saving. The inventor also has a miter setting jig for segmented c...

Bosch PS30 -- whole lotta torque

Bosch PS30 -- whole lotta torque

My 18V Makita finally died and I needed a replacement. I decided to get a more compact drill driver because I wanted to be able to get inside drawers, tight spaces, etc., not to mention the handyness of carrying a smaller tool. The PS30 isn’t as small as the PS20. The chuck is 3/8” – which I also wanted. And that’s what I got—not as big as a 1/2” drive, not as small as a 1/4”. Heavier and more powerful than just a driver but not as heavy as an 18V...

Bosch T308B Jig Saw Blades

Bosch T308B Jig Saw Blades

I had heard favoable reports of these blades and when I actually found them in a store here on Maui I was shocked. Usually we don’t get to see new products so quickly here. Anyway, I tried them and was very impressed. They cut on the up and the down. No to very little tearing even of veneered plywood. One less thing to think about—do I draw, and hence cut, on the bottom or the top of the plywood?!They’re a little thick so you can’t do tight turns, but other than tha...
