FISHING LURE DRIVE FOR GRANT #1: FISHING LURE DRIVE FOR GRANT---LJ's I need your help...

Dear Fellow LJ’s…

If you read no other entry today I would like to ask you to take 5 minutes and read the following plea for help for a great young man…you can learn more about his story here.

I have been a part of this wonderful community for two years and I have seen some great things…projects, jokes, review, forums—-but the part that keeps me coming back is the compassion for woodworking and most importantly the compassion for the fellow members here and the communities we live in.

I would like to ask all of you for a little help…not for me, but for a young 17 year old who has been struggling with a horrible disease for 10 years and has spent 200 days of the past year in the hospital 1500 miles from home His family has been in the Children’s Hospital near Milwaukee to get treatment for his disease…and in the past 200 plus days he has been on an amazing and scary rollercoaster to recovery…6 months ago they were hoping that they would be heading home fully recovered from his transplant by March—-and each time he has gotten close to release something new has popped up that pushes him back…and now the closest estimate is that they will still be in Wisconsin until August/September. All the while his family has uprooted and been living in the hospital with him.

Unfortunately last month a change for the worst was added to his physical illness. Grant—a smiling, intelligent GREAT kid has started to lose hope…he has started to wonder what all this is for and is it time to give up—-ie. His emotional health has started to go down…and the doctors say this worries them more then all the other hurdles he has faced…

This gave me an idea that ALL OF US—-WOODWORKERS can help him greatly…Grant likes to fish with his dad and brother…and on his website where his family writes a daily blog on his health he has chosen a background that has FISHING LURES decorating the sides…the few times that he has been able to leave the hospital he has gone to Cabella’s which I understand is a great outdoors store found in the midwest…

So my fellow LJ’s…I would love to hold a “FISHING LURES FOR GRANT DRIVE”…make a fishing lure, write a card for Grant wishing him his health and maybe a good fishing story…and send it to me…as I receive them I will send them off to Grant as a surprise. He has already expressed the desire for a road trip to get home when he is finally released from the hospital with his dad—-so maybe a road trip that has the promise of some great days of fishing on the way home would really raise his spirits…

Will you help me raise this young man’s spirit…I truly believe this could help him live if he has one more thing to hope for…

If you can contribute reply here…maybe a lure…maybe something that would go in a tackle box…then send me a PM and I will give you my address…as I get several at a time I will send them off to Grant…

My special project…if I get enough of a response from all of you I would like to attempt to make a special tackle box for Grant…I have never made a box but I have seen soooo many great ones on this site that I am sure I will have lots of help…

So what do you say…thanks for reading this far…if you have already made some lures—-help me out by getting the drive off to a good start…

Let me know…keep this blog “fresh on the rotation” when you can by making comment on your progress…if you turn your lure into a project that you post please tell this story and add a link to this blog so that new LJ’s will learn about this drive…

One more favor—-if you know of any LJ’s who have already posted LUREs…send me a message so I can send them a request for a few to get us off to a good start…

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…lets help Grant!

Your friend,

Matt

Hi Matt, Good of you to take up Grant’s cause. I don’t make lures, but I have a lot of fishing tackle I haven’t used much in the last few years. OOPs, I guess i do make lures, I tie flies. I am willing to participate. How about it LJ’s? Can we get the ball a rolling? Maybe you should post this as a project, it might get more views and attention.

Daren Nelson makes some awesome looking lures and I’m sure he’d be willing to help. He is on the 5th page of the Jocks section on this site. Sorry, I don’t know how to do a link to him.

Safety first Karson ;). Those hook protectors do keep me/others from getting poked. Mainly I started doing that so the hooks would not scratch the finish in shipping. (I actually used to make those lures as a pretty lucrative business, but got bored, so it is only for fun now)

What a great idea Matt. My heart and prayers go out to thius young man and his family.

As a former hard core tournament bass fisherman, my buddies and I used to love creating our own lures. I would truly enjoy sending some of these to a fellow outdoorsman to use and cherish.

Look for my PM and I will get them on their way.

Lures are easy; if you are turning a stick bait like the one that I made for Grant, start with a piece of wood 1” larger than you want the finished lure to be. Then put a mark at 1/3 of the length. Then just taper from the mark to the end of the lure, this will leave a small piece to cut off at each end of the lure. If you are carving one you do not need the extra inch it will only get in the way.

I suggest that you use a dowel for your first lure, that way you can see the grain of the wood better before you start. Also, you can paint the lure and the eyes. Then just add the hardware.

Matt, I picked up the card yesterday while we were out and about. I have been thinking, always a dangerous activity, I have a lot of outdoor and fishing books. With everyone sending lures, maybe one of them would be better for a bit of diversity??

I found a lure making kit at my Reno Woodcraft. It makes 10 and supplies a carrying case. I found a book on “how-to” also. I will make one or two lures and give the rest of the kit to you (at the Sacramento Woodworking Show) to give to Grant with the book. Maybe he and his father can make the rest.

For anyone interested in following Grants progress or… If you check on “you can learn more about his story here” in the first sentence of Matt’s post You may sign up to receive Grants daily journal which his mom Wendy up dates daily and have it e-mailed to you every time there is an entry. Additionally you may sign his book and leave a message. I did and I do and while I mentioned that I had heard about him from Matt, I was careful not to mention the ‘lures’. That’s Matt’s surprise. This kid is coming out of a very bad complication but seems to be making slow but steady progress. next week they MIGHT let him start taking pedilite his first by-mouth substance in quite a while and in a while some water. It makes you re-exam what we have ever day without thinking about it, no wonder hes down.

Your last line RTB: “It makes you re-exam what we have ever day without thinking about it, no wonder hes down.” is so true…Grant has gone through so much…he is receiving amazing medical care and still he struggles…and has a long road a head—-thus why i started this—-because his mental health (desire to keep fighting) has slipped a bit…

He is improving…he will make it…I know it…but any push we can give—-a goal…to go fishing with his dad one day is why i started this…hope is powerful!!

Chuck…I am a teacher…and I worked with Grant’s mom at my old school…and Grant was one of my students…but I know the whole family…for the past year they have been detailing their story and I cant tell you how I feel as 7pm approaches—-and I see my e-mail go “ding” and I know they have added an update on thier blog about Grant’s health…i cant do anything else for the next 5 minutes but check to see his status…

They have almost lost him countless times…and this past 8 months has been the biggest roller coaster…

They aare just really good people and deserve the best…

ok…off to the post office this minute…since going to the WOODWORKING SHOW tomorrow…

Good morning everyone…fresh off of a great day yesterday at the wood show…there I met 5 LJ’s and spent a lot of money…but the first part of the day was meeting ODIE…and he personally gave me an entire kit and book for grant…

The kit is from woodcraft and it comes with all the goods to make lures including the plastic lure box…so he bought the kit…made the first two…and then gave the rest of the kit to Grant and his dad to make…it was a great way to start the day…not to mention he added a great lure making book..

THANK YOU ODIE…if you want to see the two lures he made check here.

hey jerry i did not take pictures of the items in the box since there is a picture of all the items that are made via project phtos or on this blog…ie Todd’s dvd…when I add my lures (still waiting for package from PSI…to make mine) I will do a 2nd blog in the “series” and will put a link for all the made projects so far…

I have a feeling that most people wont be reading all the comments and if I link the lure projects here then wont be seen by too many…

but if you click on all the links in this blog you will see all the individual projects…

To bring everyone up to date, Grant continues to improvement and they have been given a TE NATIVE discharge date of 5/11/09 which will also be his 250th day in the hospital. Lets all pray or keep our fingers crossed that he continues to improve, gets to go home and the treatment is a success. 250 days is a lot like a sentence that a stay in the hospital.

Thanks for the posted update on Grant…when I read the blog about him last night I had the urge to come on and share the news—-so thank you…since I held off…

Just to remind everyone—-he will still be far from home when he gets released…they will then stay at the Ronald McDonald House about a 10 minute walk from the main hospital…from their he will be treated as an outpatient…visiting the hospital everyday for his care—-it will be a great day when he gets to that point…

Our care packages will still be needed…and if you are new to this blog please let me know if you want to contribute…we have lots of time…

I have not heard whether it has arrived…i sent it via snail mail last friday…so anyday now…

Thanks for any thoughts, prayers, karma…love in Grant’s direction…the family will still need us for a long time to come…but the news has been sooooooooooooo hopeful the last two weeks…

That great news. Now just pray a little harder that it continues. I’ll bet when the package arrives you will get a call or an e-mail. Hope it puts a big smile on his face and encourages him to continue getting better.

You’re right of course and for those who don’t follow the daily journal He’s even made a few entries himself. I must say that he is a young man of (very) few words.
