Feb. 12, 2010. I have been slapping together ugly-but-useful items occasionally since the 1970's. "Serious" hobby woodworker since about 2000. I have made several items that I proud of because they look like "normal woodworking projects." They are finished nicely, look like they came from a plan even if they didn't, and most people would not object to having them in their homes if they had the need for them.
HOWEVER!!! ;-) Most of my projects are not in your "normal woodworking projects" class, if most of the woodworkers on the web are telling the truth about what they work on. ;-) I *love* to build something I need:
- as fast as possible,
- stronger than necessary,
- using only the materials I have on hand. It's a bonus to use materials most folks would throw away, or in some cases DID throw away.
The two two-drawer pedestals from a discarded office desk became my wheeled, small, tall "workbench" with 4-drawer storage. A few days ago our best snow shovel was starting to break but a couple minutes with the drill, riveter and a piece shelving bracket had the shovel back in the fight against Mother Nature's three feet of white laughter on the Washington DC area. ;-)
I like building nice looking things, and I *really* enjoy "Make-Do Engineering."
