I really wanted to like this video

I really wanted to like this video

06-09-2014 01:17 PM by Marcus | 13 comments »

I won this video in a LJ’s contest last fall, which happens to be right when I was moving from MN to CO, so watching the video was not a high priority. I finally sat down to watch it this weekend, and it bordered on painful. Full disclosure, I only watched the first 2 hours of the 4 hours of the DVD and have a pretty good understanding of working w/ jointers and planers. So the first 15 minutes is him telling us what he does at his shop followed by a scenic tour of I assume the cou...

Nice tool, but not perfect.

Nice tool, but not perfect.

So I’ll start off the review by saying that I am pretty new to turning, and very new to turning bowls. I’ve been using a 3/8” Sorby gouge and it works well. I’ve been watching a few videos of the easy wood tools on youtube and decided I had to get one. The price is more than your standard bowl gouge at $120 (and another $15 when you have to replace the blade), but cheaper than the Sorby carbide tools. I picked mine up at Woodcraft, and after talking to a few turner...

Move over Bessey Revos?

Move over Bessey Revos?

02-16-2013 08:55 PM by Marcus | 20 comments »

I recently did a quick write up of a couple of Bessey Revo clamps that I had just purchased. I was very pleased and still am with them. In the comments, the Jorgenson Cabinet Master’s seemed pretty popular, so in the back of my mind, I thought I would try them out some day. I rarely go to Woodcraft due to it’s proximity, but I needed a piece of padauk ASAP and my normal lumberyard is closed and the Rockler down the road was sold out. I gave Woodcraft a call and they had some...

My quick grip clamps are now gathering dust

My quick grip clamps are now gathering dust

Well, maybe my quick grip clamps are not gathering dust, but they are definitely not getting used near as much after purchase a few of these. I bought 3 of the 40” versions to supplement other clamps on a very large glue. They quickly became my go to clamps. Unlike my other bessey parallel clamps, these have a nice large rubber handle that make it easy to really twist and lock down on a piece. I’ve yet to have any issues with flexing with them either, but most of the work I ...

A few minor annoyances, but otherwise a great dowel jig.

A few minor annoyances, but otherwise a great dowel jig.

I just completed my first project using this jig after picking up the master set from JessEm . At the introductory price, it was a very appealing setup compared to what else was on the market. JessEm shipped it out quickly and it arrived at my home safely a few days later. First impressions were that this was a very solidly made jig. Previously, I had been using the small clamp on beadlock jig from Rockler and was expecting something of the same heft. This jig will shock out when you s...

Too easy NOT to use

Too easy NOT to use

01-02-2013 02:55 PM by Marcus | 6 comments »

I’m assuming like a lot of other LJ’ers out there, I tend not to use feather boards because they always seem like a hassle to get placed. When I am going to make a cut that would really benefit or I see a safety issue with, I would use them, but generally speaking, they sat dormant. I have seen these magnetic feather boards for a couple years and thought they were a bit of a gimmick, so disregarded them. Over the years though, good reviews keep piling up so with the 20% coupon ...
