To all my LJ family out there………
It has been quite some time since I have posted any projects and or had much involvement at all on LJ’s…….
The last 6 months have been like a roller coaster that you wouldn’t believe…
On a pleasant note, I started the buildout of the “finishing room” on my work shop around August of last year. Everything was going fine, I almost got it completed by November and then the weather hit. Snow and rain like anything so it really put the brakes on wrapping everything up. Then the holidays and family health issues.
As the new year came around, I thought that everything was going to get back on track and I could finish my project……….Well, guess what “Murphy struck big time”.
My Mom passed away on the 22nd of January after a long illness in the rest home she was in for over 9 years. She was 88 and we had a great relationship and a lot of wonderful memories. Being the oldest of 3, the responsibility of all of the affairs became mine. My Dad is 90, but in very good health but just not up to what it needs to take care of things. For the rest of January and February I was back and forth between my Dad’s house and mine ( 180 miles each way ) many, many times.
Once Mom was taken care of, then the issue of Dad came up. Being 90 years old and now pretty much alone where he was ( Clear Lake, in Northern California ) he really wanted to move up closer to me. Well, now my next project………
After a couple of months dedicated to finding the right retirement center for him, getting his house cleaned out and packed up ( they lived there for 35 years ..you can’t believe just how much “crap” you can accumulate in that amount of time ) I just last week got him moved up close to us ( 20 miles away ) and into a very nice independent living situation where they fix his meals, clean once a week and watch out for him. I am still helping him get settled, unpacking, organizing things, getting all the medical stuff taken care of and addresses, banking taking care of. By the end of this month I should be back into the shop and getting the buildout completed. THEN maybe I can actually get back to making boxes…… what a concept !!!
I have missed being active on LJ’s and hope to get back into the swing of things in a couple of months. Just wanted to let you all know what I was up to and that I have not disappeared into oblivion. Thinking of all of you, take care and thanks for taking a moment to read this long note !!! Gene -

Gene, good to see you back. Life does seem to slow us down. Hope to see some new work soon.

Boy your story is dejavu to me. I went through a somewhat similar situation a few years ago. Being the patriarch of the family can be stressfull at times. In the end I felt comfort in the fact that I could give back to my parents that raised and guided me into adulthood. I hope you feel the same satifaction and enjoy your time in your new shop. Good luck and visit your father often.

My condolences to your family Gene. Enjoy the time with your Father when you can
and keep at doing what you do best.

I was just admiring your cutting board today as I’ve saved it in my favorites.
Sure is a great design.

Thanks everyone, your thoughts are so much appreciated…..
John, sorry I missed you the other day, I was still helping my Dad.
A1, Robert, TurnTurn, Greg, Thanks, it is good to be back.
Bullhead – You are so right….. even though it was a “ton” of work, I was ever so
happy to do it for my Dad. We have a very close relationship and it is great to have him close.
Yes, it is our time to repay what was given to us all our lives…..
Waho6, thanks and glad you like the CB….. ( My wife does also !!! )

Gene…

Sounds like a tough 6 months and I am sorry for your loss. I look forward to some new BOX making…but family always plays a huge role in our time—physically and emotionally…

We too have struggled in Southern California and will be heading back to Napa in June…with lots of emotion attached to this year. Its amazing how we all have similiar struggles…thanks for shariing…and cheers to some easier times!

Matt
