Saw Talk #11: More Thoughts on Sharpening Backsaws

411 days ago by Brit | 56 comments »

I’ve been hesitating to post this entry on my Saw Talk blog series, basically because I don’t feel I’ve sharpened enough saws yet to make any recommendations to others. Instead, I thought I would take the opportunity to point you to some websites that I have found helpful. I have read most of the information available on the web on this subject and the links below are what I consider to be the best information for those new to sharpening. If you are serious about finding out about this subjec...

376 days ago by jjw5858 | 12 comments »

Hi friends here we are again back in the shop and making and marking up the next to do’s for this saw till project I have been working on. This project is just what is needed for my fast growing collection of handsaws as you will see…..lol. This is a piece that has brought some more expansion in the learning of joinery, and getting a chance to exercise some new lessons learned. Pic 1-2: I needed to make a pair 1×2 mortice’s on each side for my rail to joint into t...

Saw Talk #8: File Holder for Jointing Saws and Scrapers

437 days ago by Brit | 55 comments »

Before I can sharpen my backsaws, I need to make two things: a file holder for jointing the teeth and a saw vise. I was going to post both of these items together, but I think the file holder deserves its own post. A file holder is also useful for jointing hand scrapers. Some people don’t bother with a file holder and just hold the file with their hands, but it’s easier to keep the file perpendicular to the teeth using a holder with a fence that rides against the side of the plate. I’ve seen ...

The Humble Hand Brace - A Beginner's Guide to Restoring, Buying and Using #1: Part 1 - Restoring a Brace to 'Like New' Condition

645 days ago by Brit | 59 comments »

In a recent tool gloat, dakremer showed off three lovely braces he’d purchased and said “Now I just have to learn how to restore this kind of thing”. WayneC was first to congratulate him and then proceeded to drop me in it (only joking) by saying “Brit has lots of experience in restoring braces”. Later in the comments dakremer said he would love to restore at least one of them to like new condition. Always a sucker for punishment, I agreed to do a blog on restoring a hand brace and I’ve...

Vacation pictures of Fort Ross, back in the days.

683 days ago by PaBull | 2 comments »

We took a two week vacation with 8 of our kids in our motor home and went North to visit the coast just North of San Francisco by Manchester and a later a week in the Redwoods by Myers Flat. The reason for this post is the stop at Fort Ross. On the way to the KOA campground in Manchester along the 1, we stopped at Fort Ross. For the full history check http://www.fortrossstatepark.org/. But it all started in 1812. This fort was pretty much completely rebuild by volunteers and no...

Tips for picking a saw blade

1253 days ago by knotscott | 21 comments »

There are a number of different factors that should be considered in saw blade selection. Decent quality is essential or you’re sunk from the beginning. The saw’s end performance is largely determined by proper setup and blade selection. You don’t need to spend big bucks to get a good blade, but more expensive blades typically increase your chances of getting good quality. As with many things, there are often a variety of choices that each have merit, so consider what’...

Grizzly G0555 -new dust port #2: Grizzly G0555 Dust Port- Revised Design

715 days ago by Jim Jakosh | 7 comments »

I must admit my first attempt at a acceptable dust port for my Grizzly G0555 failed. It still left opening for dust to escape and I trashed it. I had to cut a lot of particle board in circles and thoroughly dusted the shop. That stopped me after that project and I wanted to collect the dust RIGHT OFF THE BLADE before it got to the lower port on the saw and everywhere else. So the following is what I came up with and it worked well after feeding 4 feet of particle board through it for a test....
