The Wood Whisperer Split Roubo Guild Build

The Wood Whisperer Split Roubo Guild Build

I am surprised that there has not been a review of TWW guild posted before. I am a novice wood worker and last spring I decided it was time to build my first workbench. I dont plan on building more than one of these, so I decided to build the best one that I could. After doing all the obligatory research by reading Schwarz’s book, Landis’ book and reading all I could here on LJ’s, I still didn’t feel I had the skills to pull this off. So, I joined the TWW guild spec...

Ancorayachtservice.com Chain Vise

Ancorayachtservice.com Chain Vise

Chain Vise Kit As I was blogging about my split Roubo bench build using BenchCrafted hardware, Jim (Boatman53) offered me a prototype of his chain drive for the leg vise. This is a chain that goes from the chop, through the front leg and then down to the parallel beam. It is really clever idea that eliminates the need for the parallel pin. Just an FYI: I needed to chamfer all the dog holes and the parallel guide holes on my bench. I have a cheap countersink from Lowe’s for the parallel guide holes but it sucks. Talk about chatter. At the end the holes look more like ten point stars. I thought about a round over bit in the trim router but I still need a good countersink. Then I saw this in the Lee Valley catalogue. It even mentions dog holes. Free shipping and it was a deal. Smooth! No chatter. No ...

Respectable starter set

Purchased this set about a year ago to get me started woodworking. The set is currently on clearance for $76 at Woodcraft. I realize that these are not a set of Lie Nielsens, Ashley Iles, or vintage 750’s. Therefore, my expectations were guarded. They lived up to my expectations but they certainly did NOT exceed them. Now, I do not have any significant experience with any other chisels except a couple a Stanley’s that I got from Lowe’s in the distant past. They come on...

Inspiring Aspirations

Inspiring Aspirations

I just finished “A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook” by James Krenov. This was his first book and published 35 years ago in 1976. I chose to read it because many of the reviews consider it a classic, he is well known personality in woodworking, and I like his understated but elegant style. Other than seeing Krenov style hand planes and his quotes as lumberjock signatures, I really didn’t know much about him. Well, his tome was quite enjoyable but it is a departure from the o...
