Novice woodworker. I've cobbled together projects through the years but the degree of sophistication was limited to fabrication by circular saw, electric drill, framing square and deck screws. I have wanted to do build furniture for a long time but this is the first period in my life that I have not been broke, working 120 hrs/week or moving every 2-3 years. I now have a little time, a little cash and a stationary residence to invest in woodworking tools and machinery. I have spent very close to a year converting a bay and a half of a three car garage into a nice shop. I am blessed to have to funds to do so. The posts and reviews on this site have heavily influenced my purchasing decisions.

I observed, interestingly, when I first started that most of the folks who already have woodworking tools inherited them from the fathers. I would ask " hey Joe, you have a table saw don't you? How did you decide on that model or brand?" almost uniformly they would reply that they got it from their father or grandfather. That being said, you will find nothing in my shop that is antique. Ive not bought anything from Craglist or Ebay( can't claim that anymore). During my shop set up I kept two things in mind. I want to buy it once and I hope that my son is proud when he says" oh, those hand planes, I got those from my dad."

Houdee Lysdexic,

You must have a heck of a spell checker, as your namesake is not perceivable from reading your notes. Could it be a mathematics disorder?

I was bumping around looking at mallets as I have the pieces of one scattered around my garage workbench. (Played a bit with a little bandsaw last night after the last playoff game). You speak of being a newbie, but sa I followed your mallet to your page I’d like to say that I find all your work exquisite.

I have to say I just wish. It’s all good however, I’ll keep at it and though not as retentive as yours ( a slight twist on the OCD thang), I will post my mallet upon completion. Keep up the good work. Please know that there is no intent on disrespecting at all but rather the opposite, just not adequately verbalized as neither am I wood or word smith. A lysdexic might understand.

Best Regards, Mario

Have your say...
