Quickest path to quality results

Quickest path to quality results

I have recently taken an interest in making wooden planes. I did the usual browsing around and found some free content with the basic ideas. I made a few planes based on some youtube videos and other articles. It went pretty smoothly. The problem is the planes sucked. While well constructed adjustment was always an issue and they required a lot of tinkering to get right. Then I happened upon Scott Meek and learned he produced a video on how he makes his smoothing plane. I purchased the dig...

Excellent option for portable dust collection

Excellent option for portable dust collection

213 days ago by lumberjoe | 7 comments »

Like many, I don’t have the space or power requirements for a large dust collector. I need something small that doesn’t draw a lot of power (I only have 30 amps available). This little unit fits the bill. I have my tools aranged so everything that needs a proper 4” dust collector is in close proximity, and I have a quick connect on the hose. The good: This unit is quiet compared to a shop vac and has plenty of power when connected to one tool at a time. It has no troub...

Best sander I have ever used

Best sander I have ever used

This is truly a 5 star sander (unfortunately with a 5 star price to boot). I’ve always been an ROS guy but never able to get a mirror smooth finish without some hand touch-up in certain areas. This sander delivers! The Good Overall Construction This sander is well built. It’s heavy, yet ergonomically pleasing. The front handle comes off if need be. It is solid, quiet, and vibration free. It comes with a dust port fitting, or a dust collection tube with a filter inside (that ...

I can't believe these are 8 bucks

I can't believe these are 8 bucks

I didn’t feel like making my own bench dogs, I also didn’t feel like paying tons of money for them. In one of my many recent trips to woodcraft, I saw these and decided to try them out The Good They work. They fit snugly in the 3/4” holes I drilled and laid flat on the bench top. They are nylon, but appear to be very strong. I clamped down on my vise way more than I needed to a few times to see if they would crack or give. They didn’t. The flat faces are just the...

Yes I bought one of these, yes I actually like it - go ahead and start laughing

First off, writing this review to me is like admitting in front of all my friends that I bought and really like the new Justin Bieber album. It’s a “piece of crap direct drive tiny useless toy”. I have actually said those words to other people considering this. So why did I get it? Well for one, I have grown to like handtools. I don’t have room for another giant (expensive) 220v power hungry piece of cast iron. I have a few planes including a stanley jointer and I a...

$40 For a tape measure?? Absolutely!

$40 For a tape measure?? Absolutely!

I saw this at a booth at the New England Woodworking show a few weekends ago. At first it seemed like just another gimmick, but I noticed the company is local to me. I am always one to give local businesses a shot, so I asked for some more information. What I found out was this is not a gimmick. I would go as far to say this is a must have. You are probably thinking ”A tape measure is a tape measure, what makes this one $40?”. Well, let me answer that for you. Before I get into...

Watch out Diablo - Irwin does it again, this time with 24 teeth

Watch out Diablo - Irwin does it again, this time with 24 teeth

I’ve been sitting on these blades for a while as I have been quite busy. Brand new in the package I have a 24 tooth Diablo rip blade, and a 24 tooth Irwin Marples rip blade. I did a comparison of the diablo/Marples 50 tooth blades, but the Diablo I had was used a few times. This time for comparisons sake, both are brand spankin new. Note: this review is for the Irwin Marples blade that that will be the focus. The Freud Diablo was used for comparison. All cuts were performed on a perf...

Tool snobs cover your eyes, another HF gem

Tool snobs cover your eyes, another HF gem

I very recently got into turning. I have 2 nice Sorby’s gouges and an Easy Rougher. My wife LOVES the easy rougher, I’m not sure if it is my technique or if it is designed for righties (I am a lefty), but I find I have much more control and can turn much better with a traditional gouge. After putting some miles on the Sorbys, it came down to the feared sharpening time. I bought an 8” grinder and made a jig, but was still very nervous about putting that very expensive steel t...

Move over Diablo, Irwin got something right for once

Move over Diablo, Irwin got something right for once

730 days ago by lumberjoe | 49 comments »

Yesterday I found myself in Lowes. Rumor was they were offloading all of their CMT stuff cheap. While browsing around I stumbled upon the Marples blades. Disclaimer I have a saw blade addiction. If I see something new or exciting, I have to buy it. It’s a problem and I need help! Also I am not a fan of Irwin at all. Their marathon blades are pure garbage, and the “classic” blades are a downgrade from whatever came on your saw – as hard to beleive as that is. I did some...

Rarely seen level of Customer Service these days

Rarely seen level of Customer Service these days

In my review for Klingspor sandpaper, I mentioned I had issues with the diablo sandpaper. I also posted a review of the diablo sandpaper on the home depot website. A few weeks later, I got an email from a home depot employee that specializes in the Diablo line that HD carries. After a brief email exchange, he called me with one of Frued’s lead developers for the diablo sandpaper on the phone. We spent about an hour talking about my sanding experience. What impressed me the most was both...
