I purchased this block of of wood for a turning project, but at the time did not know what I would do with it. The block was very inexpensive- about $30.00. At the time it had a label on it but I took the label off and now I do not know what species of wood it is. Can you tell by looking? It is now in the first coat of finish, so almost done.

Scratch cocobolo, First Cocobolo is way more expensive, & I ”know” Cocobolo, but Bocote may be in the running

Looks a bit like Bocote. Did it smell odd, sort of like rotten lemons?

I will not be able to answer that for a couple of weeks. I have a cold & my sniffer ain’t working right. I had my dog smell it, but he didn’t have a lemon to compare it to, so I got a lemon, now we just have to wait a couple weeks for the lemon to rot.
