Jack-o-Lantern with a fiber optic mohawk

It’s not wood but here’s my first attempt at a pumpkin since maybe the late 70’s or early 80’s when using just a kitchen knife (definately easier with carving tools). Before I started I knew I wanted to try shading by not cutting completly through the pumpkin so I had to think in reverse as to where to carve so the dark areas are actually the pumpkin skin. Also I remembered about ten years ago I found a group of fiber optic strands in Los Angeles after a concert and thought it could work for a mohawk, I just had to use a light bulb instead of a candle. I had a double ended fixture from when I used to keep snakes and put a 7 watt red bulb in one end and a 7 watt clear in the other.

Abstact sculpture in Redwood

I had purchased anew carving tool for my angle grinder and thought I would just try something real quick to try the tool out. Well it didn’t turn out to be quick as none of the other things have eitherand it is still not finished due to I don’t have a purpose for it. But it did take some interesting pictures maybe someone has an idea for finishing it? One of the hardest things to deal with was the contrasting hardness between the grain (I hate Redwood for carving).

Here’s a guitar I designed, not ever to build as full size guitar due to I do not play so why put all the time into one if I can’t play it. But I doodle a lot and wanted to make a wall hanging one that would look cool on the wall. It is about 24 inches long made from a poor example of Quilted Maple (took me two years and two cameras to get pictures showing any figure) not sure what the neck is made from it was scrap material I found on a construction site that I put a thick Walnut veneer over. Pickups are Ebony with Stainless Steel rod, also has some brass sheet & Mosaic Pin Stock.

Freeform Sculpture

I used a piece of Manzanita for this and guess that it took around 300 hours to complete. I did have the shapeing and sanding complete once and tried tung oil as a finish and it turned a crappy brown. I hated it and figured after about 200 hours I couldn’t stop there so started grinding and sanding again. After a consultation with Sam Maloof on what finish to use that would keep it as red as possible (He suggested using only a dark tinted wax) it was time to make a base. For the base I used a piece of MDO (medium density overlay) that I had laying around shaped it sanded it laqured it sanded it rubbed it out polished and waxed it. After it was completed I brought it back over to Sam’s for critque and he did like it but suggested that the shape of the base might pull your eye away and distract from the sculpture (see the over saturated picture #2). This is exactly what my Mother had said when she had seen it, however I was sick and tired of working on this by now and left it as is. Maybe if I find a nice oval piece of marble someday i’ll change it, let me know your opinon on the base change or not?
