Cracking bowls - 16 replies
Last month I turned a couple of green bowls from pecan to an approx 3/4” to 1” thickness. For the last couple of days I have been trying to turn them down to about 1/4” to 3/8” wall thickness. This is my first attempt to turn thin sided dry bowls and I have cracked both of them. One I got a catch and the bowl split in ...

Turning cypress - 8 replies
Has anyone turned any cypress? Reason I ask is my son has found a fell log about 8’ long in the woods about 14”-16” at big end and 8”-9” at small end. Looked like might have been left by loggers. When I get my chainsaw tuned up next week he is going to get me a blank to try before we cut the whole tree. Don̵...

Turning Chinaberry - 11 replies
Anybody ever turned chinaberry. This is my first time with it. Is it a good wood to turn? Seemed to be kinda stringy. I got two 10” x 12” green blanks. I painted the edges with latex paint. I cut one blank in half and turned a bowl. Ended up about 8” x 4”. I placed it in a paper bag and put on the shelf. I turned...

Backing up in the site - 13 replies
When you post a comment on a project and then want to go back to the project gallery is there a way besides using the backup button to go there? The only way I have found to get back is to backup through the post screen to the project gallery page and I have noticed that when I do that it doesn’t increment the post counter under the pictu...

Lesson learned the hard way - 35 replies
Well it finally happened. A bowl busted on the lathe while I was turning. Until I bought the Powermatic I had never tried to turn large bowls. This bowl was 14” and I had rough turned the outside close to where I wanted it. I had the inside finished and sanded. I went to finish the outside when I had a grab. I had my face shield on but...

Homemade tool rest - 5 replies
My brother welded these for me yesterday. The only rest that came with the Powermatic was a 14” one and it was pretty hard to get close with short turnings. I bought some 1” CR, 1/4 CR and 1/4×3 flat plate and made a couple of shorter rest. First one is 6” long and I saw it on one of the videos I think the Droiser(sp) l...

First bowl I put a finish on. - 4 replies
This is more or less a practice bowl. I had a piece of cherry that had some cracks in it. I used it to turn this bowl anyway. It is the first bowl I have put any kind of finish on. I used Capt Eddie’s shine juice and it turned out pretty good.

Support arm for Dewalt 788 Scroll Saw - 6 replies
After posting this project on a prop for my Dewalt SS arm (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/60970) I was informed by Godofbiscuits of a diff support for the arm. On looking at it and also seeing it on Steve Goods link I decided to build my own. I used a 10g x 1 1/2 x approx 18” piece of sheet metal and drilled and slotted it for the supp...

Glue up of thin pieces - 23 replies
I am making a picnic plate holder similar to the on in the picture and I have never glued up thin pieces. This is 1×6 red oak and I resawed it in half. What would be the best way to go about this. I have no pressure or glue on wood at this time. I usually use titebond 11.

I have the Craftsman 12” lathe tube type. It is an older model please go to my werkshop and see it. My question is what size, type, etc chuck would be ok for this lathe. I have the spindle drivers and 2 face plates but I want to venture into things I can’t do with these like better methods of holding bowls etc.

Repair broken chair - 11 replies
This is one of my dining room table chairs that has a brace that has come loose. What glue and technique would be the best to make this repair? I have never tried to repair any furniture but I won’t learn any younger. I also have a chair that has a broken brace on one side. I know I will have to drill out the broken piece and re...
