I was watching one of my new favorite tv shows tonight, Time Warp, on the Discovery Channel. They had the inventor of the Saw Stop system on showing off the system. At the end of the segment, he ACTUALLY put HIS finger into the blade. OMG….made my heart stop, but the system worked as designed.

I love that show! I can’t believe I missed this one!
here’s hoping for repeats…
looking on the Discovery Channel page, this looks to be the episode:
Show Title: Break-dancing
Topics: The destructive force of power tools, the seemingly physics-bending motions of break-dancing, and why a bullet fired underwater goes askew.
Premiere: Nov. 19, 2008

Very cool. One thing though. I’ve seen some of the photos of people who have been saved by this saw and they usually have a little nick on their finger. Most people using a table saw are pushing a piece of stock through the saw a little faster than what is shown in this video. I suspect that if he simulated an actual ripping process, there might be a little blood. Awesome technology.

Talk about bad Karma. I looked at the SawStop in person on a Friday. The following Sunday I cut my finger on the TS. I have yet to get it but it is on my list. I can say that having experiencing what it feels like there is no way that I would want to test it!
