Part 1: You never know
When things become confusing, and I’m talking about the design aspect now as I have yet to begin this project, the shop gets quiet. My mind scopes the shop in search of something. A piece of material? A jig? Anything that can “push” me in the direction I need to go. Does my piece require the use of my leigh jig? Maybe I should start with the material instead of thinking about the process first. I search through the pile of wood looking for figure, something that stands out...
Part 2: behind closed doors
It’s been a while since this blog started. My mind has been full of so many projects, most of which were rash decisions to start. When I wrote the original part of this I mentioned the materials and that I would start the project the next day. Well I did cut a chunk of maple and it made it’s way from the shop to my dining room table. The table has become my carving bench, this way I can spend time with the future owner to this project who happens to be my girlfriend. The exci...
Part 3: base
I didn’t want anyone thinking that there wouldn’t be progress on this project. So here is a picture of the base. It is solid wenge. I want to thank everyone who is following along this and any other project I post. It is appreciated.Enjoy.
Part 4: Austin
Well in my little world things change on a regular basis. As I said before I don’t make drawings, and if I do it’s because the project is well on it’s way and I’m caught between liking it and not. So I draw it to see it. Normally I make changes from that point. Well there’s been a change in this project. I seemed to have found myself at Austin Hardwoods today looking to purchase some more Bubinga. Well as fate would have it there was a pile of Padauk next t...
Part 5: Padauk
Well after I returned to the shop with my padauk from Austin hardware and lumber, I cut the material down to sizes close to what I was going to work with and ran them on edge over the jointer. After getting the edges straight and true I glued them up into planks and let them dry. I pulled them from the clamps and ran them through the drum sander. Then cut them to final width then length. I then set up my leigh jig and routed the dovetails and wha la the basic box stands. In these picks...
Part 6: marquetry conquest
Well it has been a while since my last posting on this project. As promised I will show my way of doing marquetry and carvings. Remember that these are my techniques, and yours may vary. There are a ton of ways of doing things and I’m sure there’s a lot of ways easier then mine. For instance many of you may prefer to use a router to route out a majority of the material, then use chisels to cut to the line. I use chisels simply because I do the work on my dining room table. I...
Part 7: Progress pics
Just thought I’d snap some progress pics for all to see. These pics show the marquetry on the door sitting on the cabinet, just to give an idea of how it will look. The marquetry on the door is just over half way done. There are a lot more flowers on some branches I haven’t inlayed yet, along with a mysterious….. There is also a fallen petal that you can see on the last image. This is to remember the people we have lost in our lives. This is a long process, but in the end...
Part 8: Completed Door
Well it’s been a while since I started the marquetry on the door. It’s now complete, well at least getting in all the pieces. I have to sand everything and fit the door to the cabinet. I am undecided if I want to use a pore filler on this because the padauk is so porous. I will admit to you right now that not every fit is perfect. After countless hours holding a knife fatigue sets in followed by some sloppiness. I try my best to stop working on it at that point but after a few...
Part 9: interior arch and columns
Well here I am again. Joy to the world. LOL. I am working on the interior of the box and here is where it stands. The parts you see in the pictures are NOT attached in any fashion, in fact I have a piece of scrap pine holding up the back of the shelf that sits on the arch. There will be additions added that will hold this up, but ssshhhhh it’s a secret! I turned the columns out of wenge to match the handle and the base. Instead of turning a piece and then cutting it in half I took...
Part 10: Just a little longer
Well I’m on the home stretch on this project guys. The main door is hung, the interior is installed and the handle is on. Now I have one more interior door to install and then I can start the finish. So the reason for this is to let everyone know that either tomorrow or sunday the project will be complete and I will post the final blog. It’s been a long road and I enjoyed every minute of it. I have to say this project took a very long time. I may have to smoke a cigar after thi...
Part 11: The final frontier (Parental Discretion is Advised)
Well today I got the first coat of my mixture of tung oil, blo, and poly. I am posting it here now as done, although I will add one or two more coats of oil in the days to come. This project has been fun to make and I think I’ve been able to successfully come out of it with some new knowledge. Which is always a good thing I suppose. I had a story in my head for this project but I figured I would let each viewer make up their own.So lets start on the outside. The overall cabinetov...
