More Craigslist Insanity - 39 replies

Listings like these make me wonder where people get their price information. This ad has 3 used tools listed in nice condition, and each one is near the original MSRP or higher. They did a nice job with the listing and pics, just not the pricing. http://rochester.craigslist.org/tls/3282183013.html ALL FOR SALE!!!! Rigid 6 1/8” J...

Why Is Rough Sawn Lumber Cut In Such Long Lengths? - 22 replies

The title pretty much states my question. I have a small shop and limited storage space…most of my wood storage is less than 8 feet wide, so most of the time that I buy rough sawn lumber I end up cutting it into pieces that’ll fit my rack. In my 11 years of woodworking I’ve only once needed a piece of lumber that even approa...

Some Old Tools...Anything Interesting Here? - 26 replies

Hi gang – While cleaning the shop I got to poking around some of the old hand tools I’ve picked up over the years. I’ve got some working knowledge of old bench planes so haven’t shown those, but I know next to nothing when it comes to old bit braces, compass planes, etc. I’m not looking to sell anything, but am cu...

Raw Linseed Oil - 16 replies

I bought an old can of raw linseed oil at a garage sale for 50 cents because the can was old enough to be cool. It’s still full and is still liquid….how long with that stuff keep? Also, I’ve used BLO in the past, but never raw LO….what can you do with the raw stuff?

Why is this site so slow lately? - 32 replies

My PC isn’t exactly state of the art, but it’s “optimized” nicely, and generally makes short work of internet tasks. Lately I’ve noticed this site being slower to respond than usual on several occasions. This morning it’s extremely sloooooow. Anyone else experiencing this or know why? Other sites seem to b...

Anyone else hate saw dust? - 9 replies

My shop has been long overdue for a fresh layout and a good cleaning. Got up early Saturday and started rearranging the layout according to a plan I had worked out. Geepers there’s saw dust everywhere! I’m not talking about those innocent fresh piles of saw dust left by a table saw cut. Everything I moved had piles of cob-web co...

Thoughts on a Hitachi EC510 Air Compressor - 16 replies

I’m looking for an inexpensive compressor for general house/shop use…brad nailer, HVLP sprayer, tire inflation, blowing out dust, etc. There’s a reconditioned Hitachi EC510 6 gallon 1.1 hp 145 PSI compressor on sale for $80, which seems like an attractive price to me….new ones sell in the $180-$190 range and gets pretty ...

The Kontera Ads Need to Go! - 20 replies

I don’t generally post off-topic stuff, and I don’t generally get involved in the posts about advertising on the site, but those Kontera ads that popup right in the middle of the screen, and that can’t be closed on demand need to go! Those are a lot different than an ad off to the side or at the top of the screen that I can ig...

BORK Blade Guard Update (video) - 4 replies

FYI….For those of you who own a BORK riving knife and blade guard, or who have an interest in one, Bob Ross has made a nice update to the BORK Blade Guard (BBG). He was kind enough to send me the updated piece, so I could add it to my original BBG. If you currently have a BBG, I believe he’ll send you the hinge piece if you ask. F...

Great Deals On Nice Saw Blades - 7 replies

Over the years I’ve posted many times preaching against buying cheap blades because they’re usually false economy in the long run, and often don’t perform very well for very long. Every once in a while an opportunity rolls along to buy a very good saw blade at a very good price, and now’s one of those times! Onsrud curr...

SOLD: Two Hand Planes - Record 04-1/2 & Record 03 - 1 reply

I got a little carried away buying model trains this winter (like everything else!), and need to sell some stuff to generate a little cash. These are duplicates in my Record hand plane collection…a # 04-1/2 and #03. These are both heavier built older planes with the older style frog, lateral lever, and Y-adjuster. Both are in excellent ...

New Toilet Seat Guitar Made It's Debut Today... - 11 replies

A little off topic, but this Christmas project was definitely a hit at our house today. It’s been played nearly non-stop by someone all day (and it’s still early!). I suspect things will get worse when my brother’s kids show up later on. The two older guys already have guitars, so this was supposed to be for the 3 younger k...

FYI: The Steel City 35990C and 35990G (for those who missed the Ridgid R4511) - 8 replies

FYI – Steel City has a hybrid/new era contractor saw out….the 35590C and 35990G. Steel City/Orion manufactured the Ridgid R4511 and the Craftsman 22116…this one appears to be very similar to the former R4511 but offers a cast iron top instead of the granite top. They do offer an optional 35990G with a granite top for an addi...

When Did the Woocraft (Woodriver) Router Bits Get So Expensive? - 1 reply

While browsing through Woodcraft’s recent flyer, I was surprised to see the prices of their housebrand router bits….even at 40% off they seemed higher than I’d be willing to pay for them. They used to put the “Woodcraft” brand bits on sale for $5 each…I’ve purchased several that I thought were a good bu...

Inexpensive Wood Dyes - 16 replies

Has anyone ever tried the common RIT fabric dyes on wood? At ~ $3/box they’re considerably less expensive that the $18 Transtint dyes at Woodcraft. They’re also easier to come by. For $3, I decided to experiment and was fairly blown away by the richness in color. Here’s a look at the RIT “Kelly Green” on curly...

Oak Plywood Rant - 13 replies

It’s been around 6 years since I’ve done a project using much oak plywood….if there’s a next time, the ply won’t be sourced from Lowes or HD. Maybe it was just the available lot I had to select from, but holy cow this stuff is bordering unusable. I should have passed, but I guess I assumed it would ok. The “...

Magnetic Bit Holder Stuck In Impact Driver - 7 replies

I’ve got a hex shank magnetic bit holder stuck in a Hitachi 14.4v impact driver, and so far haven’t figured out a way to get it to release. When I pull the sleeve back to release the bit holder, it doesn’t budge. Anyone else every experience anything like this, and does anyone have any ideas how to free the bit? TIA! It l...

Got My 10.8V Hitachi Li-Ion Mini Driver a Litte Wet and It's Dead! - 10 replies

It didn’t get submerged, but I apparently dipped at least part of the battery in the pool, and the darn thing is dead. I let it dry for a few hours and it came back to life for a few minutes, but now is dead again. Did I fry this thing? It’d be a shame if I killed it…it’s my favorite. Suggestions or thoughts?
