Shaker Hall Table

After several projects, my skill set has finally improved enough for me to feel comfortable displaying some of my work.

There is nothing particularly spectacular about this project, it is built from plans purchased from Woodsmith (Plansnow.com). built from cherry and finished with 2 coats of General Seal-a-Cell Clear, burnished with 4 OT steel wool between coats, then there are 6 coats of Arm-r-Seal gloss and finally 2 coats of Arm-r-Seal Semi-gloss. It rubbed out beautifully! Instructions found on David Marks Web Site

I did deviate from the plans as purchased, The plans called for cherry thru and thru and I substituted Poplar for the secondary structure and the drawer sides, the drawer bottoms were supposed to be 1/4” plywood and I made them from solid 1/2” poplar with a rabbet to fit the groove. (Plywood doesn’t belong on a piece like this)

The drawers in the plan were lipped drawers and I chose to make flush fit drawers, and the planed drawer fronts were attached with lock rabbets and I substituted hand cut dovetails.

I also added poplar drawer guides as well to hopefully keep them sliding straight for many years to come, a liberal coat of wax and we will see. I really wanted to add a small band inlay around the top, but will give that a bit more practice before I try it for real, anyway simplicity is the theme in shaker pieces so it is just fine without the embellishment.

Everyone looks for and appreciates positive feedback and I am no different, but constructive criticism will definitely be appreciated.

Thanks for looking!
