Shop made shoulder plane #1: Finally finished

1625 days ago by parkerdude | 12 comments »

I wanted to try my hand at making hand planes, the shop needs several. Struggling with the design concept, I bought a book “Making Traditional Wooden Planes” by John M. Whelan, it was no novel but a good source of wood plane design info. It’s worth reading if you’re researching wooden hand planes. Trying to keep the first plane simple I decided on making a small shoulder plane in the Krenov style. Looking around my shop I found an old 1” chisel. It is harder than heck, so I took it a...

1767 days ago by chscholz | 11 comments »

Forgive me, I don’t hang out here all that often. I finally had the opportunity to visit a master woodworker who still uses traditional methods and tools. So I thought I share a few snapshots with y’all. In fact traditional Chinese woodworking has been quite illusive. A few times a almost had the opportunity to visit a traditional shop it turned out that the woodworker retired and gave all his tools away. Shoulder Plane - Mason Dixon Style

1921 days ago by Karson | 11 comments »

The Woodcraft Magazine Aug/Sept 2008 had a plan for a Shoulder Plane. Our woodworking club decided to make that item as a workshop. The workshop was held Jan 10-11, 2009. We had 12 people take the class, the cost was $13.00 for the blade purchased from Woodcraft and $10.00 if you wanted the wood supplied by the instructor. The wood that he supplied was Tiger Maple with Madagascar Ebony sole. Some Sapele was provided as glue strips for the planes. My son David and I took our own ...

Is is a Web or Blog?

It’s difficult to type right now because I decided to run my bandsaw blade part of the way through my right middle finger Sunday afternoon. Thank goodness it was just the ¼” blade. I hate having to sand blood off a project. I just went through a huge web site overhaul this week. It was a big decision to commit the time, but the results were worth the effort. When I started Appalachian Craftsmen last year, I needed to get an e-commerce site up rather quickly. I flashed back seven year...
