I’m building a rustic tv stand with some beautiful cedar and I’m wondering if tung oil will change the color. Any answers?

It will darken the color. It will have a little more yellowish tint than just some water.

Kimberly, if you want to check on the color that a clear finish will add to the wood just wipe it down with mineral spirits. The resulting appearance will be fairly representative of a clear topcoat. As Karson said it will darken the wood slightly but a clear topcoat, such as tung oil, will also add a beautiful sheen and depth to the appearance of the wood.

If you have the tung oil you can try it on a scrap piece or cut off.

Pretty much anything of the liquid variety will darken the wood slightly. That being said, tung oil is relatively benign in this manner. It is a T.V. stand and shouldn’t be exposed to any liquids, so maybe just varnish and reduce (REDUCE – not make obsolete) the amount of discoloration if you want to keep the original wood color.

I would like to stain it to be uniform somewhat. the whole pink and white natural color is not right for the look I want. Any recomendations? I was hoping for a color similar to that of the home depot planks. The tung oil Idea was great I’ve never used it before it is really nice. Always used poly
