WE got home recently from a three week car trip to Pennsylvania .
This was a somewhat aggravating trip because of the weather and car problems but we had many good times along the way .
Our first stop was in Regina Saskatchewan which is my wife’s home town and dropped of some graduation presents for her nice (a box I made ).
From there to Fargo ND and spent half the next day getting the ABS brakes fixed and on we went to Winona Michigan and contacted John Schutz and arranged a visit the next day .Well we had a great couple of hours having coffee and cake and some good conversation and exchanged some gifts a awl I made for John and he presented me with a nice tray a maple leaf and a set of trees that are all his own creation .
Well what better visit can one ask for and John and his wife Barbara are just some great hosts and I think we have become friends with this face to face meeting not just buddies on LJ’s .

The awl very similar to this one .

The gifts from John what treasures to take home as memories .
That afternoon we drove to Chicago area and along the I remembered that JL7-Jeff hails from Minneapolis and should have given him a surprise visit but by that time we pretty much in the Chicago area and tried to find Double DD -Dave but got so confused in that big place and got stuck in construction traffic and heavy rain that we decided to find a hotel and call it a day .
Carried on the next day to Scranton PA and spent some good times with our kids and grand kids which was the main reason for the trip .
I contacted Dave from there and mailed off the gift I had made for him . I had put a couple of pennies in the head of the mallet and one was a 1952 US penny guessing that that maybe his birth year and it worked out to be right making it just a little more special for Dave and I think he will enjoy this little tapper mallet and not use it to close paint cans .

Dave also sent a gift to me in Scranton but it did not show and when we were leaving I stopped at the post office to check and it was found and handed over after the guys where done playing catch with it .
On we went to Ottawa Canada to visit my sons in laws and had a great couple of days ,what a beautiful city and the headquarters of LEE VALLEY TOOLS and a two hour visit to that store (Absolute priority)
From Ottawa it was a four day trip home and it was just a fantastic site seeing trip going around the north side of the lakes and back home through the prairies .
Well all I can say I wish we would have taken another week and did some more surprise visits with LJ’s along the way like Roger Bean and Jim Jakosh and some others in the areas we traveled ,it is just such a plaesure to meet buddies and spent a couple of hours with them .

Now that I am home again I am thinking of maybe arranging a meet of LJ’s somewhere in the west of USA or Canada that would be great .
I am open from you guys and girls for suggestions how this could be arranged .

Thank you all for putting up with me and listen to my excuses and I hope you are all well and making sawdust .

Be well and take care Klaus /Kiefer

Hey Klaus,

John sent me some photos from your visit. I haven’t met John in person yet, but certainly we will soon…..You drove right past my place, and would have welcomed the visit!

Sounds like a great adventure, except for the car problems!

Looking forward to a meeting in the future….....

Sounds like a good trip over all, still hoping to head down to take a look at your vise in the near future. Good thing I was busy the last 2 weeks as you were not home anyways. What are your plans for the next couple of weeks, any days better than others?

I’ve met quite a few LJ’s now in several countries and haven’t yet been disappointed. What a great group.
I’m glad you had a good trip despite the weather etc and I share your frustration at missing out on chances to meet more LJs. I travel right past several of my buddies every year (twice) on my relocation trips from B.C. to Az. but with a dog and a cat in the car, we just have to put our heads down and drive right through. :-(
Glad you’re back home safely and keep hoping well get together one day.

Klaus, the trip may have ended but you brought many of us a little closer with your adventures. I have the mallet on a nice clean area on the workbench and I doubt if it will get any heavy use as it holds a special memory of our almost meeting up. One warning I should of given you is that around the Chicago land area there are only 2 seasons in the year. Winter and construction. Add a little rain and it’s a disaster. Glad you are back safe and will have to give it some thought about a place where more LJ’s can meet up.

Klaus, it was a treat to have you and Darlene…and the pup, too, stop by for a visit…..I put the awl to use the next day, I think. Thanks for including me in your cross country adventure.

Nice trip report Klaus. It is wonderful to be able to visit with other LJ buddies and I’m sure those wonderful gifts you brought with were well received.
