Another Veritas winner - Mounting plates for use with Bessey Clamps on Festool MFT

Another Veritas winner - Mounting plates for use with Bessey Clamps on Festool MFT

As I was leaving the Lee Valley store late this last week, I glanced over at the Festool display and noticed the Bessey Self Adjusting clamps sitting on the MFT table. Having not previously seen them and used to the De-Sta-Co models for jigs in my shop, I stopped to examine the quality and then noticed the Veritas plate for use with the Festool MFT or other 20mm holes in a bench. Very simply, it is a black aluminum anodized plate with a threaded post inserted (could it be switched out t...

Jeff Miller writes a solid instructional manual for woodworkers

Jeff Miller writes a solid instructional manual for woodworkers

This is the first Popular Woodworking book that I have really found entertaining. Some of the previous ones I have read have been quite elementary and didn’t offer much substance. ”Woodworking with Body, Mind and Senses”, this book is a good addition to your library. Jeff Miller provides some basics in the first few chapters so the understanding of working wood fibers is clear, then moves on to sharpening tools, techniques, safety, jigs, tool use, etc. then brings it a...

Worth the money...

Worth the money...

I did see an excellent review on this jig after posting mine, but here are my thoughts anyway… I purchased the I-Box about 4 months ago after seeing a positive comment on LJs and noticing it on sale at a local tool vendor, but did not take it out of the box as I didn’t have an immediate need for box joints – was in the middle of my bench build. I was recently asked to build a custom oak makeup desk with drawers for a friend, and thought maybe I would try out the jig fo...

This DVD impressed me, where some of his others have not. I learned that I have been wasting time by failing to follow these methods, and I am eager to try them out to see what difference it will make. The 65 minutes covers hand planing, mortise and tenons, rabbets and fillisters, joinery and curved work, all employing the Coarse, Medium and Fine methods. From the DVD back cover: ”Most woodworking projects involve roughing, refining and finishing operations. In this DVD, Chr...

Massive Mortise Chisels - Excellent Quality!

Massive Mortise Chisels - Excellent Quality!

431 days ago by jusfine | 8 comments »

The first photo and description of the set of chisels from Lee Valley website is as follows, which gives some of the technical details. These are massive chisels for quickly wasting material from deep mortises. The 1/2” thick, high-carbon steel blades (Rc61) taper in width from tip to shoulder for sidewall clearance when cutting deep mortises. The 6-1/2” hooped hornbeam handles are oversize for grip and have leather shock washers. About 13” to 14” long overall, t...

Excellent operation, easy installation, only one small problem

Excellent operation, easy installation, only one small problem

I recently installed Benchcrafted hardware in my new bench, and used their new Crisscross system. I had heard it was going to be available, and waited for it’s release before ordering my hardware. The one thing I wasn’t keen on with their previous style of leg vise hardware was the constant adjustments you have to make with the pin as you vary the size of the stock being clamped. With this system, that pin is eliminated, along with the parallel guide and roller supports. ...

Grab them while you can! Great deal on import ratchet clamps!

Grab them while you can! Great deal on import ratchet clamps!

637 days ago by jusfine | 10 comments »

I received an email flyer a week or so ago stating there was a box of ratchet clamps in limited quantities for $39.00 at Lee Valley. Yesterday I stopped by the store and bought a box of them. While waiting for the clerk to bring them out so I could see the product, I looked at a Pony ratchet clamp on display and was amazed that the clamps in the box he brought were almost identical. The only difference is the ratcheting mechanism, the import brand has a notched metal bar that keeps t...
