My workshop is about half of my garage, the other half of which was converted by the previous homeowners into a living area for their parents, so I have to make the most efficient and effective use of a pretty small space. But being a retired submariner, I’m used to making due with very little space with in which to work and store my things.

I still have a nice workbench (as long as I keep it cleared off!) and on days that it isn’t lightning and raining sideways (I live in S.E. Georgia, and in the summer, that’s pretty much every day around 3:00 P.M.), I can spread out into the driveway where I have a canopy semi-permanently set up to block the sun.

My table saw is a Contractor’s Saw, the legs of which fold down allowing me to roll it in and out of my garage to save space. I have a brand-new (Father’s Day gift) Dewalt miter saw, which is a brilliantly-engineered piece of machinery. I have a plethora of hand power tools, mostly Porter Cable, a Bosch router table, an old tabletop drill press, an 8” Craftsman grinder, and a 27-year-old RBI Hawk scroll saw. The one thing I don’t have that I wish I did is a dust collection system of some kind, but I’m hoping to figure out a fix for that soon.

Not having a lot of room to work isn’t a problem for me since I’m used to being in confined spaces and having little room in which to work. One thing I did to help alleviate the space issue was to build a large rolling shelf unit that has three large shelves (2 ½ ft. (W) X 8 ft. (L)) that can hold several hundred pounds, and I roll it out into the driveway to make more room in the garage when I need it.
