New Shop #1

In early Feb when it was too cold and wet to do anything outside I was wandering thru one of the BORG's and happened to take a look at their storage shed display. I found that they could build out to a 16' x 24' building. I went home measured out 16Ă—24 in my garage. While my garage was about 6' wider and 5' deeper my tools would fit in a building 16' by 24' and I would no longer have to move vehicles in and out and tools around to work. To keep the BORGS from getting their cut I visited Tuffsheds and StorMor and got estimates from them on a 16' x 24' building on a concrete slab. I went home measured out where I wanted to put the slab found I had plenty of room. I talked to the power company found that to bring power from my existing service on my house to another building would require upgrading to a larger wire from the transformer to the house. My subdivision has all underground utilities the cost of doing that was prohibitive. The back of my lot has a 10' easementand an overhead powerline. The cost of a transformer and overhead service to a building (the existing power pole was 15' away) was well within my budget. I just needed to remove a small tree.

This is the site cleared and waiting for the slab.

I decided to go with StorMor they gave me a quote with the slab and followed up. Tuff Shed couldn't or Wouldn't give me a price on the slab and their concrete contractor never followed up. (StorMor's price with the slab was less than Tuff Shed without a slab.) I called the power company had them hang a transformer and sheduled StorMor in to start as soon as power company had the transformer hung.

Thats an idea size for a shop in my opinion. Not crazy expensive to heat and cool. Plenty of room if everything is planned out right. I'm envious for sure. Nice that you have all that loft space too.

Build day 2

Day 2 of the build StorMor finished the roof and installed the overhead door and left me with this.

Sky Building Plant Tree Garage door

Wood Floor Wood stain Flooring Fixture

I had an electrician install the service and rough in the wiring. I spent part of a day installing the insulation and my son came over on his day off and helped me install the sheetrock. Sheetrock lifts are worth every penny. I used 1/2' 12' sheets. The gypsum they use in sheetrock now is a lot heavier than it used to be. The lift made the ceiling much easier and also worked to hold the upper sheets on the walls. At the end of the day we were one sheet short of having all the rock installed when my son had to leave and I had to go to a dentist appointment. I finished the that the next day and started taping.

Wood Ladder Floor Flooring Window

I finished taping , paint, trimmed the windows and installed the lights. I used 2 20' rows of double 4' t8 fixtures. Electrician came back and finished the wiring. I have both 110 and 220 outlets. After a misunderstanding with the power company they finally made it out to finish hooking power up and installing the meter. The electrical passed the final inspection. I could sart moving in the lighter tools.

One of the rental companies in Boise has a number of small rough terrain forklifts. I rented one to bring out the heavier items. Pellet stove, workbench, lathe , table saw, planer etc. I found a used pellet stove on craig's list that was in good condition. When I got it home and started going throu it I found the firebox made out of steel was not warped both fan motor had been replaced in the last 2 years. I replace the rope in the door. It is setup for external intake air for the firebox.

About a month after the concrete was poured. I'm left with this. The tools right now take up a lot of space. It is fairly crowded but once I get the loft finished and stair built to it I will be able to space thing much better and will have plenty of room for an outfeed/assembly table. I am working on the loft now.

The loft that almost wasn't

When I first ordered my building I ordered it with an 8'x16' loft with the floor raised 6" so I would have an 8'6" ceiling under it. The rest of the building would be clear to the roof. This will give me plenty of headroom for moving full sheets of plywood and long boards. About a week before they start building I get a call from StorMor, because of the span of the building the truss design won't allow for a full width loft. The widest it can be is 10' and I can't have 8'6" ceilings by raising the loft floor. They explained the problem finally in a way that I understood and offered to floor the entire loft at no additional cost. I would have a 10'x 24" loft. I agreed to pay the little extra to have 9' ceilings, which I really wanted in the first place and had cut because I was trying to keep the cost of the building down. I still wasn't sure what I would have for headroom so didn't plan on using it for anything but storage. Once the building was up, I came home from work, the first thing I did was climb up in the loft. There was way more room than I had imagined. The walls were 5'8" high and the center was 6'8". All of a sudden this loft just became usable space. I need windows in the gable ends, insulation, sheetrock power and paint. The first thing to put in was the windows.

I found a couple of 2'x3' double pane windows at Lowe's framed it in from the inside cut out the hole, got my son over to hold the window in while I nailed and framed the windows from the outside. Light made that loft even
better.

Great shop! Why not think about a set of pull down steps if you are not going to be constantly going up and down? They would save you some floorspace down below.

Cheers!

We have access (the stairs are in)

When I first started planning this shop, I was going to access the loft with a ladder. The size of the loft didn't merit anything more. Once the changes in the building were made I began to think about a pull down ladder style access. I have one of those in my garage and it works better than a ladder. When the building was actually built and I saw the actual size of the loft. It was evident that I needed full-time easy access to fully utilize the space. I will lose some space to the stairs but the pull down ladder still requires a clear space under it. I'm going to lose some space whether I like it or not. The bigger problem was the height of the ceiling and the available run. I had almost a 10' rise and less than 9' for the run and that 9' started at a wall and there was an electrical service at that point I also needed access to. I was actually looking at about 7' actual run. It finally came to me that if I put a landing in I would get the stairs to a reasonable angle, maintain access to the electrical and actually gain back some useable floor space in the process. I ended up with a stair that had a 7.25" run and an 8" rise, not the ideal angle but it would give easy access and not be too steep.

The landing is in.

I still need to put in railings on the stair and in the loft that will come after tapeing and painting. I can use this loft now for something besides just storage. It increases the useable space in my shop by 2/3's and I gained a little space on the main floor also.

Finished (more or less)

Yesterday I finished painting the loft and started on the stair railing. The heat got me about the middle of the afternoon (first 90+ day) I had a beer and went at it this morning again. Trimmed out the room and windows and finished the stair railing.
I am as finished as this is going to be for awhile. I still need to put more light in the loft and finish installing the stove but those can wait until fall. Time to start working some projects and get tools placed where they will work the best.

Working in it

I believe my new shop is finished (more or less). I have finished the loft, railing on the stairs, and have installed and vented the pellet stove and it is heating the shop in the mornings. We've gone from 100 degree days to 60 degrees in a couple of days. Here is a couple pictures of the inside.

16' x24' is a little light but it forces me to keep things cleaned up and put up. The loft works pretty well for tool storage until I can get some cabinets on the walls. I think eventually I will use the loft for glue up and finishing.

I also installed a dust collection system. I wasn't planning on doing that for a year or so but I got curious. I went on craigs list just to se what was available in DC and there was a Jet listed for $150 about 75 miles away. I let it sit for about a month then got to thinking that might be a deal I didn't want to lose. Went back on line and the price had dropped to $125 I thought about it for another week or so then called the guy and went over and picked it up. It was a Jet 1100cfs 115/220v changed over to 220. He had hardly used it and was trying to sell his place and down size. I brought it home and plumbed it in. I put a thien separator inline and put the cone in the DC and it works great. Really glad I picked it up. Mad my shop go a couple hundred over budget. It was worth it.

Bruce, your shop is looking really good. Isn't it nice to have a dedicated man space to do your thinking, dreaming, and woodworking in? congratulations on your new space.
