I am a Cutting Board Aholic

Hi, my name is John and I am a cutting board aholic. About 6 weeks ago i made a cutting board for my wife and over that time that one board multiplied into about 30 boards of various woods and sizes. I can’t remember everyone’s name whom I borrowed (stole) their designs. Once my wife came out and saw all the boards, she suggested i should sell them. I love to work wood but have never sold anything I made, I always just gave it away. So, I gathered up all my “inventory” and headed to a local market day. I had cutting boards, bread boards/serving trays, a few boxes, a couple crosses I carved from stumps and inlaid with turqoise, a bandsaw box, wine balancers, and a few pyramids. It was an enjoyable day. I was surprised how many people asked me if I bought my “product” somewhere else and was only re-selling it. Once they understood I actually made everything I sold, they were very appreciative of the quality and craftsmanship. My prices were fair and only one person asked me to come down on my price, which I didn’t do and they still purchased. This was a great experience and I think I am hooked on making a little money doing something that I truly love to do.

Jewelry (Makeup) Box

Box is 12” high, 19” wide and 9” deep. This is a conituation into my fascination with marquetry and inlay. Though my skills are improving, I am still not completely satisfied with the results. As with anything practice improves upon skills. The box is made of white oak with blood wood for the handles and the trim. The inlays consist of maple, walnut, pecan, poplar, blood wood, and spanish cedar. Finish is danish oil with satin poly and a coat of wax.

Really has no specific use, just built for my own amusement and expanding my abilities. The case is approximately 18” tall, 22” wide and about 12” deep. One other statistic, the case weighs in at 43lbs. The top, base, and sides are hickory. The drawers and dividers are made of spanish cedar. The drawr front and pulls are walnut. The inlaid roses are blood wood and hickory. The rose stems are spanish cedar.

I made this for a friend. The box is hickory with walnut splines, banding, handle and inlay. The inlay is the emblem of the 4th Infantry Division. The 4th ID was responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussien. A commerative gun was made in their honor, a SIG P229. This box will hold one of those guns. Interior block cut out is spanish cedar.

Finished with wipe on poly and several coats of wax.
