My attempt at a 3D cutting #1: 3D Cutting Board Inspired by SPALM!

922 days ago by RetiredCoastie | 20 comments »

Quite awhile ago SPALM posted his project for a 3D cutting board: http://lumberjocks.com/SPalm/blog/17488 the more I followed his progress the more I wanted to build one myself and thanks to SPALM’s ripping jig and his idea I began building. Along the way I found myself in need of various clamping jigs that would make this project as easy and as accurate as possible. The journey begins:I built the ripping jig that Spalm built and ripped my stock with the blade set at 30 deg. using sc...

Easy. Elegant Wooden Box Hinge #1: I could kick myself

1127 days ago by shipwright | 58 comments »

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works. The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs Then this week I was making a tea box for a friend and when...

My First Bandsaw Box #1: Overview

1321 days ago by Jonathan | 4 comments »

I am in the middle of making a lot of Christmas gifts right now. I was going to make an inlayed tray as one of the gifts, but ran into a bit of a problem. Afraid that I wouldn’t finish the tray in time to ship to the east coast for Christmas, I decided to put that project on the back shelf for now and make a bandsaw box instead. I haven’t made a bandsaw box before, so I’ve decided to document my journey along the way. Basic bandsaw box construction seems like it can be...

1140 days ago by degoose | 32 comments »

This was a comment I received from a great LJ mate, Joe. Seems that some folks think this is dragging on… so .. Now We’re Moving…. The blanks are out of the clamps it is time to move on to the next step… Again this lesson is on video… so just sit right back and enjoy the presentation… There are a few key points that I wish to elaborate on…. Hearing protection .... I am aware I was lax in not using it in the previous video.. so Beth thanks &#...

Double Tumble Cutting Board

1150 days ago by SPalm | 38 comments »

Or maybe I should call it Two and a Half Steps. Anyway, I cannot believe that I am building another one of these, but heck, they are so much fun. This is a continuing saga of endgrain geometric boards using three contrasting woods. A light color, medium color, and dark wood selection are jointed and planed to the same thickness. I started by tilting the blade to 60 degrees and ripping an edge on all three boards. I then moved the blade over about an inch and ripped again creating a sma...

Jigs etc. #3: Simple Circle Cutting Jig for the Routing Table

1215 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 20 comments »

Hello all. I’m about to make a small box featuring curves. Something I don’t do often. Curves that is, not boxes and it occurred to me to feature the jig I will be using to build it with. Yes I know I’ve recently posted a couple of circle jigs for the bandsaw but there is more than one way to skin a cat and its always useful to have an alternative to call on. This is it Its just a sheet of 6mm Perspex with three slots cut in it and a 6mm pin inserted in a tapped ho...

The Making of a Walnut Bowl/Tray

1231 days ago by cranesgonewild | 28 comments »

I was visiting my parents over the Christmas holidays, when I noticed a plastic tray full of candy on the coffee table. My mom told me she got it from the dollar store. She also told me that she loves this bowl because of the divided trays. So, being the woodworker that I am. I decided that I was going to make one out of wood. Without anyone knowing, I took measurements. I do own the CMT bowl and tray bit, and it does come with a template for making this tray. However, the overall size of that...

How I made my Intersected cutting board

1252 days ago by GaryK | 31 comments »

Here is how I made my Intersected cutting board posted here. There seems to be a lot of interest in this board so here is a blog on how I made it. First of all here’s what I planned on making. It’s the top one. After I got both the circles intersected I liked how it looked with the rounded corners so I just added in the “wedge shapes”at the top and bottom and called it done. I think that it makes it very distinctive also. As one person guessed I ...

Chessboard #1: Design Plan

1268 days ago by CartersWhittling | 7 comments »

Hello. I have started a chessboard and set for an uncle and thought I would set up a project build so that I can get advice from other woodworkers and to hopefully inspire someone else. I am using maple and walnut for the project and the walnut was all resawn from logs I got from my opa’s firewood pile. So far I have almost all the walnut parts cut and the drawer dovetailed. I still need to cut most of the maple parts and then I can beginning joinery for the board. I will use dovetails ...
