dust collection

A few months ago I posted wanting advice on dust collection. Well I went with the Tempest S-series 3.5hp cyclone. It arrived on Tuesday of last week and didn’t get to install it untill Friday. This was not as easy of an install as I had hoped, it took me at least 7 hours to put the collector together and mounted to the wall. Today was the fun of running the duct work, I went with the 6” pvc for the duct 1) because it was a cheaper way to go 2) because I read alot on the net about using pvc and decided that pvc may not be as bad as I first thought 3) easier to buy locally. Well I did the first test on the planner tonight and so far I love this machine. After I have had a couple of months to use the collector I will do a review with pics for all of you. That is it for now just wanted to share the excitment.

new shop progress #4: shop floor

Hello there again guys. Seems like the only time I find time to get on here is to ask for your help. Building the new shop has been fun but also a pretty big job. Now for the question. What product did you or would you use to seal your concrete shop floor? Just a clear finish is all that I am looking for. Thanks in advance.

new shop progress #2: shop lighting

I was hoping that some of you Lumberjocks could help me out with my lighting question. I am planning on putting in eight 8’ fluorecent lights in the ceiling with the fullspectrum bulbs. My question is will all the colors show up will under these lights or will I need some other form of lighting. I have read that these are the best in the fluorecent line, but would like to here from some of you that have used them.

O.K. it has been awhile since I posted anything and I am happy to say that the shop is well under way. With any luck I will get the outside done this weakend. I do not have pics from the ground up but do have a few to share. I have done the entire thing my self along with help from my friends (should be a song) and family working in the evenings and weakends, so the progress seems slow.I just keep thinking of the rewards when it is finished. All comments are welcome. Anything you see that I should do please fill free to tell my now, as this will be my shop for hopefully along time to come.http://s207.photobucket.com/albums/bb186/woodnut2468/?action=view&current=PIC00565.jpg

new workshop

I have not posted here in a while and thought I would tell you why. The new shop is under construction!!!! I have needed a shop for a long time and finally looks like I will get it. The size of the shop will be 40’x20’ I wanted a 40’x24’ but just did not have the room for it. I am still well pleased with the idea of getting a 40’x20’ building dedicated to just my woodworking. It will be a pole barn still building and I got the poles in the ground this weekend. 16 of them to be exact I know because I dug the holes with posthole diggers. I do not have any pics at this time but I will post them as I get them I know everyone likes to see pics. Well that is all, just wanted to share my joy.

workshop size

After reading sawhorse’s blog about his workshop I have found that I can use some advice on my own shop build. Hopefully I will start the new shop in the very near future. I currently use woodworking as a side job with the hope of moving it to full time in about 3 years. My question is do you think that a 20’x40’ building would be big enough to handle a full time shop (that is the size I am thinking right now). What advice can you give on dust collection? would an outside unit be better than an inside one. should I run the dust pipes in the floor or around the walls? Which building would be best I have priced the prefab metal buildings and have a material price if I build it myself. I can save a little money if I build myself but really like the idea of the metal building being put up for me. As you can see everything is still in the planning stage right now so all advice would be helpfull. Thanks for reading.
