Watch Mandel #1: Small Project

no previous part Part 1 of Watch Mandel series no next part

Hello to everyone.

I just signed up here. I am not a lumber jock. I am looking for advice here.

I have a small (very small) project.

I want to make a “watch mandel.” At this time no such thing exists. I run a small watch manufacturing company – Stuhrling Original. Our website is www.stuhrling.com.

We need to put the size of wrist that each watch can accommodate. For instance: fits sizes 7-1/2” to 8-3/4”

There are a couple of inexact ways to measure and even if they are exact, it is quite difficult to measure using even the best of calipers.

In the jewelery industry, they make “mandels” for telling the size of rings. This is a long “conical” shaped tool that you can slide the ring onto and there are markings on the tool to tell you the size of the ring.

I would like to make a large conical shaped piece of wood with scores in it for the sizes that will range from a five inch opening to a twelve inch opening. I have drawn a schematic which shows the width and length of the overall finished piece with the scores in it as well. This is not something that would be used for any type of prototype for making an invention of some sort. I only want it for our own internal use for measuring the sizes of the watches with the straps.

I figure this is something that would be made on a lathe. Willing to pay for it or even trade a watch for it.

Anybody out there interested in helping me or any advice, please feel free to contact me via email: larry@stuhrling.com

Thank you all!

I think you’ve come to the right place! I can’t help you but I know there are many experts here who can create that very thing.

Not to take away from any fellow LJ’s, but you could also contact a local High School or Technical College that has a woodshop and ask if they would like to do one or two for a small donation or as a ‘test’ commission of sorts.

It does sound very easy to make, and even making one out of a good hard wood shouldn’t be too cost prohibitive.

I have received a few welcomes and that is nice and I really appreciate the friendliness going on here.

I am still looking for someone who can make this thing for me.

Thank you all again.

Trumpetboy, If you are in a hurry, go to an auto parts store and buy a transmission funnel. It is a long tapered funnel and the one I have here in my garage ia about the size you are looking for… And it is only about $6…

Hey Tom,

Thanks. I’ll stop by Pep Boys tonight. That may just do the trick. If anyone would like to make this thing though, I would still be interested.

Thanks again Tom. I will post tomorrow if the funnel thing works out or not.

Post your design so more people can get an idea of what exactly you’re looking for.
I only know because we took my wifes wedding ring in a few weeks ago to be resized.
Unfortunately, my lathe isn’t large enough, and my skills are so-so.

I think the word you may be looking for is Mandrel not mandel.
You should edit your header and see if you can get more responses.

Cheers
