Blister Maple Score

Blog entry by trifern posted 132 days ago 258 reads 0 times favorited 16 comments Add to Favorites

I had the good fortune of scoring some unbelievable wavy blister maple. I have never seen maple with this much blister figure in it. It is freshly cut and sealed with anchor seal. I plan to attempt turning green timber for the first time. I hope it goes well. This wood is too gorgeous to waste.

You have some nice looking wood to work with. I am sure whatever you decide to do with it will “turn” out just fine.

That is some wild grain!
Is it from a burl?
It should produce some interesting pieces.

Beautiful grain, it’s similar to the wood I used to make my Heart Box.

Dorje, I typically buy my wood from the Woodworkers Store in Pekin and Bloomington, IL. This batch came from a friend who got a call from a firewood processor. The firewood guy said “you gotta see this stuff, too nice for firewood.”

Trifern, you have to be careful. If you start turning green wood there is no going back to dried wood. The green wood cuts so much better and you can get it so much thinner and the tool stays sharp so much longer that you will hate dried wood. Also, since green wood is everywhere, I no not usually pay for it. That means that I dare try crazy things with a lot more enthusiasm. In the worst case my wife mocks me that I destroyed another one.

The wood does look very nice.
