Updated Site

I am pretty excited about my website. I updated it with a new home page and more projects.

What I think that you guys might find really interesting is the page titled “Design”. I try to share with the woodworkers as well as sell to potential clients and I think I hit it good. You can let me know.

Click on “Design”.

Bold, Confident and Competent are the first three words that come to mind. The visual impression makes quite a statement and is worth the view without the text. The text provides a depth to the man behind the work with insight into motive and methods. A very good site.

Todd,

Your new website is outstanding! I did the “quick glance test” and it impressed me. That is, I look through the website to make sure I can quickly get around with ease, the appearance is professional, and the information and photos are clear and sharp.

Once again, very well done. I will follow up with a more detailed description.

Thanks guys.

One thing I have not figured out yet is how to make a link work on the bottom of the page to take you back to the top. When I put an active link on a page to itself, it does not change. I was hoping it would reset to the top of the page.

I will have to figure that out. I know how I hate getting stuck at the bottom of a long page.

Todd, your site gets a thumbs up from me.

Does your design process take as long as mine? I sometimes will have more design time that carving time. Thank for sharing.

Roger – My design to construction time is probably lighter than yours.

It does depend on the project though. The Cooper Closet and Entertainment center were designed and built in stages.

We had an overall idea of where we were going, but the box units were built and installed first. Then the design of the doors were finalized and executed.

The chandeliers and modern furniture were designed, tweaked, design approved, and then built.

A couple of days at least goes into each design. Meet with client, design, meet with client, make revisions, meet with client.

Models easily take up days in 4 hour increments. That is 4 or 8 hours. Most models take a day. You have to figure in picking up material time and material costs too. It is a billable project.

I’ll bet you find that designing many pieces within a project as you go, like the Cooper house, is easier and produces better flow or harmony within than trying to design the entire project at first.

Todd, great web site, I love your outlook on design, it really encompasses all aspects of what design should take into account. Your projects are outstanding and beautiful. I love that circular sculpture by the water, it fit so well there. You have a unique perspective. It looks like you have a wonderful and exciting life. Kudos. mike

Todd, you are a true craftsman, the closer we get to your project, the better it looks. As for the design section of your site- Your last paragraph says it perfectly. This is what people look for when they want to commission a custom job.

Todd,

Nice website you’ve got there! I really liked the design page. I have a lot of design ideas floating in my head, but it’s nice to see how folks take those things and plop them down so they can turn them into actual pieces!

On another note, love the prairie chandeliers! Those things are seriously cool!

Great flow to the site. As mentioned above, ‘flow’ and ease of navigation is important
for any site. You’ve nailed it.

The information is clear and concise, very elegant.

Great site Todd,

You got your point across. My uncle who was a true Master Craftsman would have been proud to see the quality of your work as well as the site.

I only wish that was my shop.

Keep up the good work!

Jockmike2 – The sculpture by the water is just a model. It is pretty cool though.

Wan Dalters – I think you had trouble with my site before didn’t you?

Todd -

You have been busy! I like what you have done with your website. The front page is very dramatic which give an instant appreciation for your skill.

I know you are using iWeb. I can help with how to put a “HOME” link at the bottom of the page. Let me know if you still have trouble.

Dave – I was trying to create a link at the bottom of long pages that would take a person to the top with a click instead of having to scroll up.

Nice minimalistic design, Todd.. and looks bold as well thanks to your color scheme. The only suggestion I have is to hide the hit counter on the home page.

You may try to create link to top by using href=”#” in your top link.

Thanks for the input as always guys.

Martin – I will take a look at the top link code.

I also do not like the hit counter. I used to have it covered up with a text box to make it invisible. At that time it was giving a remote reading to my .mac home page and I could see the activity without going to the site. It does not work anymore since my first computer puked out. (Apple gave me a new computer under warranty.)

Yeah, a really nice site, just enough info, lots of good pics, well done. I agree with Martin, hide the counter.. at least until you have a lot more hits :)

Hi Todd,
I just spent some time running around in your site. I was SURPRISED to see that entry closet in there! LOL I think you have a winner there. The site is way better than the last time I visited. I especially like the design page. It is very well thought out and explains to potential clients what to expect. At the bottom you should put in a disclaimer; “Yes, I charge for the design work.” Hang in there, buddy. Glad you’re home at last.

Thos. – Thanks for checking it out. The “Design” page was written to potential clients and there is much information for the woodworker. It is a true representation of how I design and work with the client.

I know many LJ’s wonder how it works and there it is.

Your website…is very nice…consder moving the “design” part up—-so that you click on it sooner…it does really look nice…

call me when you open your school…or when you need an assistant…I can sweep up the shop…

Todd—it’s just spiffy. My favorite quote: “Most craftsman can perform the construction phase. Fewer can get through the finish phase successfully, and the design phase frustrates the most people by far. I certainly agree that this is the most challenging phase of any project.”

...It’s true. I find design to be the part which seems to stump me. Actually, I feel that I am really good at functional design but when it comes to artistic design I have to steel ideas from people like you. So thanks for the inspiration, and your website is superb.
