Getting Closer…

Well guys I can hardly stand it! I am getting so close to done on this project and yet there is so much to do. I just want to go home and be with my wife and my dogs so bad.

This job has been a nail biter every step of the way. The more I get done, the more work I have at risk if I should screw up. A mistake could cost the equivalent of a good used car – NO KIDDING.

If you want to do high-end work, the risk is high too. That is one factor most don’t think about. This seems to fit my personality though, always pushing myself to the limit in whatever I do.

Now I’m A Machinist…

Well, not really. But I did get to do some work in the machine shop of my client. He is a hobby machinist and he has all kinds of metal working equipment in the basement. If I lived in Ohio (it seems like I do now) I would spend half of my time in the wood shop and half of it in the machine shop to add metal to more of my work.

Here I am cutting the allthread for the legs of the handles.

Cutting Allthread

Applying a brushed finish to the copper handle material.

Brushing the Handles

INTENSE!

Doing the handle layout without damaging the finish or drilling in the wrong spot was tense. It took me six hours to place 6 pieces the first day. It took 6 hours to place 2 pieces today. Technical, tough, tedious!

Installing the Handles.

Just a Dry Fit…”

OK, it looks done but it’s not. The handles have had the initial fitting and now they will be removed and taken to the shop to be sprayed. I am supposed to get my finish in Friday afternoon.

Copper Handles Installed

It is exciting to see this kind of progress though!

For all the minutia in a step-by-step photo album you can check it out here http://gallery.mac.com/toddclippinger#100350&bgcolor=black.

This is just pictures with one line titles, the images say it all.

It looks to be worth the effort, Todd. I’ve never seen anything like that. It demonstrates an extra effort in design and implementation that goes above and beyond anything remotely considered normal. It borders on fascinating. I really appreciate you blogging this.

Here is a scary part that I did not mention:

After I took the picture of the install I decided I needed to get the ends of the handles to come together more accurately. So I took my little PorterCable belt sander and used it as a grinder to create the same angle on the ends of the rods while they are attached to the door.

I was thinking to myself, “Do I have nerves of steel or am I just that stupid?” Maybe the answer is a little of both but it worked.

Re-attaching jaw… Stunning. You are right about curves, Todd. Seriously kicked up to the next level.
Are the top and bottom horizontal elements metal inlay?

Very impressive. That you took a belt sander so near that finish would require nerves of steel … done any skydiving lately?

It just gets better and better, Todd. I sometimes think the fear element keeps us going. I fnished my big project on Wednesday and have been sick ever since. I think I held it off until I finished. Sure hope you get home soon.

Let me tell you a little story…Years ago I was installing a telephone line into some famous (so famous I forget his name!) artist’s outbuilding. He had converted a small barn into a studio. This guy was super nice and gave me a tour of his home. It was full of artwork. Tons of it. Absolutely beautiful stuff. I asked him which paintings were his and he said “None”. States he knows all the flaws in every one of his paintings and wouldn’t be able to rest if they were in his home.

So there comes a time when you just gotta walk away.

Wow, that house is here in Ohio? I’d have swore that house was somewhere on the west coast. Roughly where in Ohio is it?

Believe it or not it is in Centerburg. Only a mile from where I grew up. My brother and I built the house.
