Hey guys, I have had some technical difficulties with my website. Can any of you guys go over there and see if it functions? It almost always looks right to me, on the computer I made it. It does not always look right on other computers.
What is it supposed to look like? Well, typically if the craftsman style font is missing, it defaults to a standard font and the spacing on the headings will be whacked. Usually pages won’t come up and the graphics (line with diamonds) get messed up in a manner that is fairly obvious.

Todd,
I looked at your web site and the links at the top of the page for your gallery and such are in normal type but your name and the diamonds below look ok and in the craftsman style. I can get to the links but when you try to pan down the page it is really jerky. I looked at it with both Netscape and Internet Explorer.

Thanks. I wasn’t trying to trick you guys into visiting the site, I have been plagued with corruption issues. I am running on Mac too. I am working in Ohio and I have had great support from the Apple store. I bought my computer from an “authorized” Apple dealer in Billings and they increased the RAM with some cheap off brand chips (unknown to me). It turns out the chips have been creating a lot of problems and been corrupting the software. Not only were they non-Apple parts, but they used a really big chip with a really small chip and apparently they are supposed to be balanced.
The folks at Apple have really taken care of me though and if this replacement does not fix the issues they said that I would get a new computer.

Thanks Max, the links at the top of the page do have only a standard type. The headings of the page have a line with diamonds under them and that is where the craftsman style font is.

Todd -
Your site looks great to me on a Mac with Safari – Firefox – IE.
It looks like you are using iWeb. As far as I know you can not change the font style of the navigation menu.
Best Regards,
David

Thanks Dave, I am using iWeb and I think you are right. Because iWeb is in the computer and not on the internet like Go Daddy, it suffered the corruption issues I explained.

Dang, I just don’t think I can figure it all out on my end. Maybe it’s just going to have some compatibility issues being that it is from a Mac?

Looks good through Firefox here…
Also, I was so impressed with myself that I remembered the “secret way” into the shop, came back out to go to the next link… which was the “not so secret way” into the shop!
Again, looks good, and everything seemed to function a-okay!

I run firefox on a linux box and it came up fine. I also tried with another browser, Konquerer, which is now quite old and the headings didn’t come up – but that’s why I am using firefox now. It could be that iWeb is taking advantage of some features incorporated into later version browsers and those who have issues with it are simply using an older version of browser – so it’s really their issue. I’m used to this so when a site seems strange looking, I just switch browsers. Firefox always seems to work.

Hi Todd,
Everything looks great from here. Sorry I didn’t get back to you on the VT trip, actually had to cancel it. Have had a bad couple of months with my health and haven’t done much of anything, not even woodworking. Starting to feel a bit better so hopefully will be back up to speed soon. In fact this is the first time I’ve even come to lumberjocks in quite awhile.

Everything is looking at its finest here. Currently on an old Mac running Leopard and Safari 3.0.4 but last time I checked a week or so ago it was under Panther and Safari 1.x and was fine as well (only the new web gallery wasn’t compatible with the oldest Safari but it’s is a well known thing).
Don’t worry, we know that you don’t need to trick us into visiting the site, we sure enjoy going there freely!

Thanks for checking Jojo. I found out the new web gallery isn’t compatible with old Safari when my wife could not go to it on her (really) old Mac. I loaded Firefox for her when I visited home last month and it works fine. (Visited home? Been here to long.) We got the old one from a friend just days before I left for Ohio.
Here is the web address to my .Mac gallery http://gallery.mac.com/toddclippinger My most current project is Coopers Closet. There are remodeling photos and Montana photos too.

Todd,
I just checked it and it didn’t scroll smoothly. The main heads would come up with a white cover and then come clear. I’m so dumb about computers I don’t even know the right words.
Billings is still a neat town. I used to spend time there when I lived in Cody. Used to ski three days a week at Red Lodge. Memories

Hey Todd, I’m using IE7 on a 1.2M line…Your page loaded slowly and the scroll was jittery. It also seems to take an extra couple of seconds for the links to hi-lite when you hover over them. Other than that, the pics and font all look great.

I just looked at your website, I have IE7, everything went pretty well, the scroll was jittery, but everything loaded fine. all looked good. Excellent, lovely work by the way. I could only HOPE to do anything even slightly comparable. I have a feeling that you have done everything right, it is just all the different browsers that are having issues.

Site looks great and very inviting on a older Mac running Tiger, with the exception that the diamonds build in slowly. That font is very cool. What is it?

Thanks for checking guys.
I believe that some of the issues are related to the different browsers and how they read or interpret the iWeb program or .Mac hosting.
I have noticed that the diamonds load slowly and I may rebuild them as a picture image in Photoshop Elements. That may allow them to load faster.
You guys have been great with the help and suggestions.

Todd,
Went back to see what people meant by jittery scrolling, and it’s jittery for me too, mostly on the first page. I’m not familiar with the editor you are using (iWeb), but it is calling five JavaScript subroutines right off the start, which could bog things down. It also appears that the page is using layers to put trasparent images over your text images. I assume that it does this to prevent people from swiping your graphics, but the use of layers could be slowing things down, too. Just more information for a browser to handle and display. I hope you get it worked out!

The feedback you guys are giving me is great. When I go to Apple I am going to ask them about these issues and see what solutions that there may be. These also may be inherent shortcomings of the iWeb program which may be compared to a do-it yourself program that comes with the computer.

OK I went and checked on the scrolling again for myself. On my computer is scrolls smoothly.
Doug – I almost forgot to let you know that I bought the font from P22 Type Foundry. It is called Dard Hunter, who is a historical figure that was prominent in the Arts and Crafts movement. I paid about $25.
The P22 Type Foundry has many fonts that are based on historical figures. They really are the nicest fonts I have seen. Go to http://www.p22.com/

Thanks, I bought Arts and Crafts from P22, didn’t know about this one. Incidently Dard Hunter was pretty world class and associated with the Roycrofters. There is a business run by his grandson (if memory serves) that sells some very stylish home pieces. Lots of ideas for the cheapskate home shop folks too. Just don’t let your wife in on the catalogue…

OH Doug! I am well aware of Dard Hunter III and have been through the house in Chillicothe, Ohio called Mountain House. The house is still lived in by the D. Hunter III and the resident print shop has the last page of type set left as it was when his grandfather died. I found out about Dard Hunter from visiting the Roycrofter Village in NY. This was also part of a trip to Cornell College to check out the architecture and a viewing of the Byrdcliffe Colony on display at the museum there. I stopped at the Stickley factory but they were closed. Also checked out some Frank Lloyd Wright too.
I can’t believe how interesting I find history now, and it started with an interest in building furniture. I just LOVE this stuff.

Come on, you just posted this so you could show off that nifty website of yours… right? Well I am so glad you did. That is ridiculously cool!!! That is one of the most professional woodworking websites I have ever seen. I love the eye candy, but thats just because you are an amazing woodworker. I am glad you found a way to show it off and give it justice.
Your work is truly inspiring. I don’t have to tell you to keep it up, because you have found a way to do it for a living. But do keep showing us your stuff and raising the bar. We can all use the push.

Todd, that’s a killer site. Love your work, but I ran into the same issues that Tom Angle did. I have an older HP PC with a whoping 2.4GHZ processor and a massive 512K RAM. I am on a high speed cable connection but it could be that I just don’t have the hardware to keep up with your site.

Just another take on things… I checked into it, and with IE6, your home/main page is sucking up just shy of 360 MEGABYTES! Some of the other pages are not that bad, but that first page is a killer!
Either you are <include>ing too much, your raw PNG files are too large, or there is some javascript that is way too large. I do not have the time to look into it, but something on that first page is killing the responsiveness.
