Workshop #6: The finshed shop (Hopefuly)

Callum, Callum, Callum—- you’ve got a lot to learn young man about woodworking and shop building. You are NEVER done.

Seriously, once you get set up you’ll always find a way to improve it. So you’ve got a good start. Don’t hem yourself in to being “done.”

I’m jealous though—- my shop doesn’t look anything like yours. You’ve got a nice space going there.

Hi Callum;

After seeing this I see you were referring to your assemble table, regarding your pm about drawer bases. This would be referring to the lower section of the table filled with drawers.

One thing you might want to consider is using European feet with these cabinets. Tha advantage is the ease of leveling, as opposed to scribing the bottomw to match the floor, after the cabinets have been leveled.

Using these feet, you’ll be able to relocate the cabinets, and re-level them just by turning the foot. You also have the option of installing them so they can be adjusted with a screwdriver from inside the cabinet.

I don’t know if you ever said how big your shop was going to be? It seems like you have a lot of cabinets? Are you going to have enough space to work? I do not know what kind of things you are going to build? You do not need to answer all these questions. They are just things that entered my mind when I was looking at your plan. I am more of a cabinet builder and would want more floor space.

Hi Tom,

The shop is 20’x12’ and the end bench has pull out units that are on castors which will have my router table, scroll saw and other tool storage systems on. So when they are out the way I will have enough floor space hopefully. In my mind I can never have to much storage :-)

Callum, make sure you have enough room behind a 4×8’ panel to push it through your saw blade safely.
I use 10 feet for the feed side and 9 feet for the cut side.

I find free space is extremly important when dealing with big pieces of wood or furnitures. So I try to position the workshop elements against the walls and, if it isn’t possible I look for the way to make it mobile. On the other hand I try to store at least as possible: shops are not so far and visiting them is always an ocassion to meet some friends. Keep on.
