Denis,

Nice job.

Even though your chisels have a metal strike end on the handle, I would make myself a wooden mallet. The metal ends will last longer and there less of a chance of a metal chip being dislodged and becoming a potential eye safety issue. A metal hammer and a metal strike plate requires safety glasses!!!!!

Also, as you are removing the waste, you may find it easier to make “incisions” along the long sides of your mortise before trying to remove the waste piece. I usually make several cuts across the grain, along the length of the mortise. Then cuts along the sides of the mortise. Finally remove the waste pieces. With this method, there is less effort “prying” out the waste.

hand cut & drawbore mortise and tenons….?...?.... WOW Denis, you’ve come so far in such a short time! Your video covered all the essentials and you explained that joint with a level of simplicity that I haven’t seen in all the expert videos I’ve watched on the subject. Great video and great WW skills you’re building! Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. Can’t wait to see your version of tchisel’s stool.

Nice job, Dennis. Hand chopping mortises like that definitely takes some patience and dedication. Looks like you are really dedicated to the craft. Well done.

I agree with lew, get a wooden mallet or a rubber one. That two cherries chisel didn’t do anything to deserve to be hit with that hammer. LOL. Also, for your mortise why not use a drill or a drill press with a forstner bit and drill out your mortise as much as you can. You can use tape to show your depth or the press will be able to be adjusted. Seems silly to show us making the mortise by hand then making the tenon with the table saw. Why not use a hand saw? You may consider keeping the nicer material for a project and show us how to do things in poplar or cheap material.
At any rate, looks like you know what you’re doing and keep up the good work.

ya a mallet is high on the list. just haven’t got around to it yet. the reason why i am showing you guys in nicer material is because its for an actual project. thats how the majority of the things that i do are. on the real deal. and the reason why i didn’t hand cut the tenon is because well really the only good handsaw i have is a dovetail saw. and the cheeks are very hard to do with a handsaw. thats why i just said i did it with the table saw. didn’t really go into it a lot because its not that hard or anything.

Another great job TAW. I really liked the way you attached the two pieces. As I do not use glue in my projects I think I will be giving that a try. You have motivated me to give M&T a try. I do not have a WS3000 so I think I will be using a forstner bit for my first crack at it.

Keep up the great work.

ya i think you could easily do it. it really isn’t that hard. and with the drawboring you don’t have to have a piston fit. i had about 1/64” slop between the long walls of the mortise and tenon and now that its drawbored there is no problem. and you don’t need glue :)

A great Video,

I don’t think you have to worry about using the hammer on the plastic handled chisels.
