The two spurtles I made last fall in a woodturning class. The top one is oak the bottom is cherry. Both are finished with walnut oil, and so far remain unused. I’ve only seen Alton Brown over on the Food Network use one to make oatmeal, or perhaps it was haggis. I just don’t seem to make enough of either to neccessitate two spurtles!

The turner, my brother-in-law liberated from a broken cutting board. Maple.

I posted this entry pretty much verbatim over at wordpress (oh the joy of running multiple blogs) But I have updated the look of the banner to match the logo I submitted to Martin a few weeks back (now on the contest page).

FYI, the background of the virtual sign is actually part of a wooden jig or something used in bookbinding (approx 15” x 30” x 1 3/4”). I have this one, and 3 or 4 more at my grandparents house waiting for me. I’ve had this sitting in the kichen for a year now and I’m still brainstorming what I’m going to make out of them.
Any ideas?

Scott, these are very nice. Richard Raffin produced a DVD showing turned spurtles, and scoops that really impressed me. It was one of the projects that I noted in the back of my mind saying to myself, “i’ll have to make those one of these days.” And then other priorities crowded that idea out of my consciousness.

So thanks for the reminder, and thanks for your terrific artwork.

God bless

I’ve made some spoons and turners and cuttin boards for the wife, she loves that stuff and uses it all the time. Either that or she don’t want me to give it away. She’s funny that way. She really don’t like me to giive stuff away unless it turned out funky. Then its ok you can give that to so and so.. anyway, your things look good. mike
