I am 57 and retired from Kentucky State Government where I worked as a chemist for 30 years. I have two sons and three grandchildren (one newborn and a three and four year old) and have been married to my wife, Susan, for 31 years (I think that is right). I am blessed to have all my family in the immediate area and, with my retirement from state government found my new and most enjoyable occupation as a caregiver for my two grandsons while their parents work.
With regards to woodworking I would classify myself as a newbie. Most of my experience has been in the general carpentry field such as installing doors, trim and hardwood flooring. My father, a third generation carpenter, tried to interest me in woodworking when I was younger but, of course, I couldn't see any reason for learning those skills at that time. And now I don't have the opportunity to avail myself of his experience- much to my regret. I have taken several woodworking classes but remain largely self-taught. Right now I am working on improving my cabinet and joint making skills.
I am looking forward to working with the people involved in this forum through which I hope I can make a modest contribution to return some of the joy that woodworking has brought into my life.
-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

I guess it would be silly for me to ask who you’re rooting for in today’s game? I’ll be moving to Shelbyville in a few weeks, and we’ll practically be neighbors. Welcome to Lumberjocks!

Go Cats. Glad to see Big Blue as an avatar. I graduated a South Carolina “illegal fighting chicken”, but grew up and went to high school in Lexington, KY. I now live in Lexington, SC. Don’t get as many UK games here but then again it’s been a tough season this year, huh? Glad to see you found LJ’s.

Thanks for the comments, the wonderful thing about the craft of woodworking is that we can create with our hands and heart(and of course God’s help). That is a very rare gift in today’s world. The most unique thing about the Lumberjocks site is the incredible diversity, it really is amazing. Although it can become addicting it will help to focus your ideas. I look forward to seeing your work.
Take care,
harold

Thanks for your reply RE: my bandsaw blog,
A new major Tool is always a biggy. I will keep my SLR handy for a few install pics.
I now THINK I have most major tools *see my page, I could be wrong (apart from silly things like chisel-mortisers, I would rather get further into hand tools, less buying, more using…
I read an article that stated most woodworkers end up with the same-ish tools. a mix and hand tools and machinery, some processes favour one over the other in priority, but the journey ends similarly.

Hi Scott. Just wanted to say thanks for the comments on my shop. It looks like you are in the same place I am. Most of my tools are mobil too. In my last house I had a 1 1/2 car and by the time I got everything in It was really cramped. Every time I would start with a project it took about 30 minutes just to move all the junk to make space for the wood. This time I had a third car added to my new house and no cars will inter that side. It is nice to open the door on nice days though. Talk to you later, Printman.

Thanks for the welcome. I’m a member of many online communities and this is the first time I’ve had so many different people actually welcome a new member. I’ve only recently discovered the site and I’ve already found it very useful for a novice woodworker. This site seems like a fantastic community and I can’t wait to join in with questions, projects and someday insight.
Thanks,
Pat

Wow . . .thanks for the welcome. I feel somewhat guilty joining since I’m not really a woodworker . . .yet! It’s a dream of mine and I was enjoying what I saw and read on LumberJocks. Looking for inspiration and words of advice on how to get started.

Hey Scott,
I finally got some pitcures posted of my workshop, as you asked. Will try to get some up on my latest project… a coco bolo floorstanding mirror – it is almost ready for assembly.
