My grandfather owned a small town lumberyard, and I practically grew up there, working summers since I was twelve until I was out of high school. When I wasn't humping bales of fiberglass insulation or unloading railcars of creosote fence posts (try doing both back to back on a hot summer afternoon), I was in the cabinet shop asking questions and building things out of scrap, and I loved it. Other than some meatball projects around the house, that was the extent for my woodworking until the last year or so. I then gave to my son, a box my grandfather had built for me when I was about his age. It was larger than a breadbox, but smaller than a footlocker and had a hasp on it so I could keep some things out of the hands of my brothers and sister. It was just made of clear pine, but was very well built with my grandfathers love. Well my two daughters were naturally jealous, so I decided to make boxes for them as well. And that's where it started! Theirs I made from curly maple with dovetailed sides, the first dovetails I had ever done. It took a lot longer than I thought it would, but they were very pleased and I think they turned out well for a first project.
My corner of the garage workshop has expanded to one side full time and both sides from time to time. I buy new tools as i need them for a particular project, but I certainly have the bug. I'm currently working on a hall mirror with out of mesquite with in lays of ebony. I have so may projects lined up in my mind, I don't know how I will get out of the shop.

Welcome Tom! I’m with Dorje. We always want to see pictures of your projects, especially boxes. There are loads of boxmakers around.
Pretty much the whole spectrum of woodworkers in every specialty, pros to amateurs can be found on the site.
If there are things about the site that need clarification there are “pros” for that here as well (Picture posting, video, page formatting, the works). Just post a question and someone will be along to help. Hope you enjoy Lumberjocks.
Having too many projects in mind might be the key to longevity (as in I can’t die — I’m too far behind now).
