Okay, so I am somewhat new to the hobby, though not really a newbie. I have built a china cabinet for my ex, done plenty of trim work, and had plenty of little projects, none of which were finished (as in painted or stained). I did a custom cabinet door for the stairway storage area which I will try to post some pics of. My main focus right now is getting a planer and a jointer. I have the money for a JET 6” longbed jointer with the quick set blades. There is a big sale at Ideal Saw Works in Fresno on friday and I will be picking one up then. I might also get prices on planers then. Home Depot has a Ryobi 13” planer for $200 and I am wondering if it is worth it. Have to go, I am adopting my step-son today.

Congratulations on entering the world of Lumberjocks and postings.
I have a Ridgid jointer I bought at HD last year which has proven good so far. The blades are harder to find, but can be ordered from Ridgid. It is a good thing to have an extra set on hand.
There was a review a few months ago regarding planers. I remember the DeWalt and Jet were highly rated. If I remember correctly, the Ryobi was rated as a best value, because of the price. The drawback with it was it caused snipe on all the boards tested. I think it had to do with no infeed or outfeed table. The Ridgid planer was also rated high, just below the DeWalt and Jet.

Bill, If I remember correctly, you had to purchase the extender tables for the DeWalt to get rid of the snipe and its cost is more than twice that of the Ryobi. Good luck with the adoption!

Yes, that is what the article said Os. I guess the Ryobi did not have such outfeed tables available even. I guess you could make your own, especially with the savings from the cost of the machines.
