Trust me, I’ve been reading the information on this site for 2 straight days now. I’ve already purchased a dewalt mitre saw (my first saw ever) and are looking at some of the reviews on table saws now. Since I’m just starting out and don’t have an unlimited budget I’m buying factory reconditioned tools for the first go round. Heck, I don’t even know what a joiner does or how a router works so you can be assured I’ll be doing a LOT of reading the next couple of months. Thank goodness my first project is what I believe is called a rough cut <?> project (Deck extension), so that should get me acclimated with my tools.

All-in-all I’m very excited about have a hobby that doesn’t require a computer or t.v.

My Grandfather worked wood for over 40 years as a hobby. Coincidentally (or not) he also worked at a mill most of his adult life; so I’m starting to get an idea where this particular yearning is coming from. I’ve been ogling the gallery and it’s amazing the works of art people can create in their own garage.

Sounds like you are well on your way. Buying tools gets any of us excited. Be sure and post some installation blogs and reviews on the tools.

The fun is just starting.

Please, Take your time and learn the tools you are buying. Safety always first…skill later on. There is not a more enjoyable and satisfactory hobby in the world if you asked me. (just wish I had more time to enjoy it). LOL

Show the Mrs. the wonderful projects on the Lumberjocks site.
Have the Mrs. tell you which project she just has to have in your home.
Look disappointed and say- “I would love to make it for you, if you just had (insert tool here)”
Mrs. suggests you buy the tools you need to create HER project.

Thanks everyone! I new wood working would be a much easier sell to the misses’ because of all the great things I’ll be able to do around the house. So far it’s been a lot easier convincing her I need that power tool, than convincing her I need that new pitching wedge! My first project will be building my workbench. I have some pics of the space I plan to build it in (3rd car garage) which is roughly 10×18, and I’ll post them once I get them downloaded from my camera. Things will be tight but hopefully with proper planning I’ll be able to make do. I always enjoy looking at peoples before and after pictures; some people have great vision and ideas. Hopefully with a little trial and error I’ll be able to help someone else down the road.
