Easter Eggs

I made a bottle stopper out of Tulipwood.
Bottle stopper

My wife liked it and suggested I make some Easter eggs for our two nephews who are also God-children. Never to turn down an authorized trip to the shop, I agreed. First was to get some Tulipwood and cut roughly to length.

Then I chucked it up…

...turned a tenon…

...reversed it…

...roughed the egg shape…

...turned off the end…

...and asked The Boss if the egg in an “egg cup” was acceptable. Well, no.

I didn’t know how to proceed from there. I put it out and a fellow Jock (I am terribly sorry I forgot who, ‘cause I’d love to credit him) linked me to a site with some rather detailed instructions.

I got a chunk of Southern Yellow Pine…

...and turned a jam chuck.

Here it is toward the end of the process. (I missed the pictures of doing the tenon end removal)
Finishing

A couple of shots of the finished eggs.

Hi rikkor

This is a very nice project. I am sure that you nephews will appreciate the eggs. And it is always best to do what the Boss says. It makes our lives much easier in the long run.

By the way it does look like your lathe work is coming along nicely. I guess you don’t want me to take it off your hands after all?

This is a nice turning blog too. You did well.

Great eggs. Now to make them hollow and turn threads to screw them together.

Geez Karson, you don’t want much from a rookie, do you.

Scott, thanks. I think you’ll have to get your own lathe.

Great post Rikkor…Love the eggs. I liked the way you took it pretty much step by step. I always forget to bring the camera in the shop with me. When I can find it.

A marvelous project. You are so perfect on the lathe. I am dreaming of having a lathe and attempt some projects like yours. Your pictures are very good.

Thanks Sharad, I appreciate the kind comment, but I am a long, long way from perfect on the lathe. The key is that I have fun on it.

Very nice work. The tulipwood is beautiful. It’s great to see a step-by-step on the process.

These are great, I love the finish on them. I’m sure the nephews will love the handmade gifts from their uncle , too.
