my journey #1: attending class/buying wood

i have finally started my woodworking class as the Eliot School in JP (Boston). The class is a very intimate setting with two very knowledge filled teachers and a ta who seems on the up and up. there are about 14 people in the class which is nice but will prove otherwise once the tools begin to fly, there is only one planer and one jointer. luckily my first project is a basic wooden box with dovetail joints and a basic hinged lid.

i am still on the fence about bringing my own gear to the class to further increase my comfort and skill with my personal tools, i just know someone will use my dovetail saw for something not so nice or my chisels for banging something.

to prepare for the class/project i hit Rockler up in Salem, NH. the store was pretty good but actually smaller and less stocked then my usual haunt, Rockler in Cambridge, Ma. i purchased a few board feet of curly maple to begin with.

after talking to a few other woodworkers i was given advice to buy rough cut wood that i would have to plane and joint myself but at a much more reasonable price, i think that is my plan for my next wood purchase.
