A question about finishing... - 6 replies Okay, I’ve just finished another piece of casework with drawers, and I’m once again obsessing over this one question: “How far back on the drawer sides do I go with the stain?” I’ve seen cabinet makers that insisted that NO stain goes on the drawer sides, some insist on maybe the first visible few inches, and one... |

A dumb question about crown molding.... - 21 replies Jeez, I hate to admit it…but I just finished my basement office, and the more I look at my 3 1/2” crown molding, the more I think I may have put it all in upside-down! Looking at the unused material, the profile is three ‘steps’, then a cove, then a convex radius, then a few more ‘steps’... It’s typical... |

Better than calipers! - 5 replies I’ve got a lathe which I haven’t used much, in fact most of my focus has been casework. However, with my piano-stool project underway, virtually every piece was to be produced on the lathe. While sizing tenons on the ends of the spindles, I recalled a method of exactly measuring the tenon diameters using common open-end wrenches! By... |

Urban Myth: Home Depot Policy - 58 replies Years ago when I started actively fitting up my shop with better tools, there was a guy in the neighborhood who always seemed to have like-new tools for sale in his yard sale, or on his front lawn for sale on the weekend. I bought a 10 inch Ryobi planer, Delta Scroll saw, delta 14” band saw and a couple of routers and various power saws f... |

Piano-Stool question - 7 replies Does anyone know offhand what the best angle of splay should be for piano-stool legs? Or is it simply a matter of the feet defining a bigger circle than the diameter of the seat? This is for a project, the classic-styled stool with four turned legs and an Acme screw in the center post to raise/lower the seat. Thanks, all! |

My unfinished dovetail invention - 2 replies I like to handcut through-dovetails, I use an old Sears jig when I make half-blind ones like for drawers. I enjoy cutting the tails, but the pins, well that’s another story! So, I wondered if I could make a sliding jig, similar to the common crosscut cradle that a lot of you have made. I theorized, if I made a pivoting backboard, that... |

Long Edge Sander for Cheepskates - 7 replies Having worked in several shops with great equipment, I’ve often yearned for access to those same tools in my basement workshop. Since it’s just a hobby, it’s impossible to justify the cash outlay, you could just never get your moneys’ worth even if you bought ‘em all. With necessity being the Mother of Invention,... |

Air Tank for cheepskates - 8 replies http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk161/poopiekat/018.jpg Have you ever brought your BBQ tanks in for a fill-up, only to be told they are expired/obsolete? I needed an air tank to retrieve a car with flat tires…So I took an empty propane tank, purged out all the fumes and put on a hose from an old BBQ I wasn’t using. With a h... |

Seeking a Rip Fence - 12 replies Hi! I am looking for a fence for my ‘King Canada’ 10” table saw. These units are the same as many other rebranded 1.5 hp units like Delta/Rockwell, Jet, etc. This saw has a 27” cast iron top, and currently has 1.25”d steel tubes on which the fence rests. The fence is about 33” overall, and has a cam lever ... |

"Theft of Intellectual Property" - 32 replies Well, not really.. but have you ever presented a unique idea, a clever project, a useful item, and before you know it, everyone is producing the same item? I ask, because of bad experiences I had, producing short runs of reproduction antiques and wooden craft-wares for a gift shop with a high-end tourist clientele. Very often, the proprietor... |
