When is 5/16" not 5/16"? - 9 replies In the continuing saga of inexact things like dimensions and numbers, I’ve found another curious example. On a 5/16” bolt, what exactly is 5/16”? It’s not the diameter – I’ll tell you that. Take a look at the attached pictures and help me understand how to pick out the appropriate bolt for my application&... |

Making Arts & Crafts Style Pinned Joinery - 3 replies I’m going to be making a frame over the few days and want to pin the joints in a typical Greene & Greene Co. Fashion. I ran a test on the procedure with some ebony and a saddle joint of poplar. It went well enough, but making the pins seemed inefficient. How are others making the chamfered head, square pins seen in the Arts & Cr... |

Screw Inserts in Magnolia - 3 replies I’ve been working on a miter jig for the table saw and I’m having some trouble with screws in magnolia. The wood is dense, but I wouldn’t think any more so than oak. I have 1/4” brass screw inserts that I can’t get to seat nicely into this wood. I’ve increased the whole diameter in 32nds and 64ths to 1/4... |

Ripping a Straight Edge - 6 replies I screwed a scrap piece of wood onto some rough Magnolia last night to rip a clean edge on it. It worked as expected, though the screw holes left by the jig are annoying. Is there some fancy clamping technique I’m missing that could give me the same results without screw holes? |

Bit Brace w/10" or More Sweep - 5 replies I’m interested in acquiring a brace. I would prefer to get a used one with a 10” sweep or more. I understand a 16” sweep is better for large bits, but also somewhat rare. eBay has them on occasion, but the collectors are driving the prices up too much for a user (me). Is anyone looking to unload? |

Crosscutting Hardwoods - 11 replies I’m burning…er…crosscutting some 8/4 White Ash (6” wide) tonight and having some poor results at it. The pieces I’m cutting right now are from the base of the tree; there’s a huge difference in difficulty depending on whether or not I’m cutting at the base, or on the opposite end of the board – 6&... |

Arts & Crafts, Craftsman, Greene & Greene Bros.? - 2 replies I’m really intrigued by the Arts & Crafts movement that happened in the early 1900’s as it relates to furniture design. I am particularly impressed with Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman movement and what the Greene & Greene Bros. company did for the times. I say that, but most of what I’ve seen has mostly just been b... |
