My shop is and will always be very different from the shop of any other guy on this site. First of all, it’s located in a 6 1/2’ x 8 1/2’ utility room in the back of the house. The dimensions, as well as the position of the two doors (both of which open up into the room) pretty much determined where my bench will have to go – on the short wall.
I’ve posted three pics so far. First is my “before” picture, taken of the room before I’ve done anything to it. The next picture shows what I’ve done since then: I’ve cleared most of the crap out of the room, taken down the shelf below the cabinets and removed the cabinet doors. I may remove those overhead cabinets entirely once my bench is done. That lower cabinet is functioning rather poorly as my temporary workbench. The third picture is merely a shot of the outside, taken from the alley. You can see that I have an “open air” worshop.
More pics of the shop will be added to this one once I’ve made some progress!

WOW – I thought that my shop was tight. You must use entirely hand tools? Funny how we woodworkers learn to work within the space we have. Small space=small projects, which are always welcome.

We all have to start somewhere. I am guessing good things will come from that tight space.

Yes, cajunpen, I’ll be using almost exclusively hand tools…which is fine as that’s where my interest lies at this point in time anyway! We do have a decent little space in front – not quite a carport but does have some overhead cover – that will function for projects where I need more space.

Hey Eric…trade ya ;)
Seriously, we will probably be sharing a LOT of ideas about setting up shops, since I think we’re the only two with them that small!

And I am struggling with the space I have. It will be a real challenge to plan out the space and how best to get what you want in your shop into it and make it functional space for your woodworking. Best of luck as you work through this.

It’s not the size that matters, It’s how you use it….

Hi Eric,
I am just now getting around to your shop post. It certainly has potential. Have you made any progress on it yet?
Thanks for the post.

Nope, not much. As of April 10, it still looks pretty much like that! My workbench plans have been delayed with that little tiny dovetail box I’m doing for my wife. Thought it would be a couple weekends project, but I think I started it in January!
