Sorry Martin, no can do… With internet cookies, it is too easy to track personal information even without entering it, and without it being on a secure server it is just too much of a risk for profiing customers and endless spam.

Why spam, Tom? We’re not asking for the email address in the survey.

And cookies are used by each membership based site on the Internet anyways. Not just by surveys.

Hi Martin.

What puzzles me is how you’ll get those prizes to respondents if personal info isn’t given or gathered when one does the survey. I was just able to take the survey without having logged into lumberjocks since I cleared all cookies/passwords and restarted my browser.

I’ll add some information as well. Cookies are not just for spam or personal information. They are a mechanism for web pages within a site to talk to each other. The information is obviously for advertisers, but LumberJocks needs advertisers to stay free and if Martin can provide valuable information to them, then he can continue to maintain and increase the functionality of LumberJocks. As for distribution of prizes, the survey asks for your LumberJocks nickname so that Martin can get the prizes to the right people.

The internet is a scary place, but I figure if you can’t trust Martin and LumberJocks, then who can you trust?

That would be my perspective.

as long as the editorial content of the web page is produced by the membership that is all that matters…

I guess the next time the shrinks sit down they will have to come up with a fancy sounding name for internet paranoia. I mean if you have information that you don’t want out then don’t keep it on your computer. as far as spam goes browsers today, with a small effort on your part, they can block most spam. with this type of survey there is no one who gives a hoot about any of us as individuals but rather us as a group so thier marketing can be focused in those area where it will at least get read. Perhaps those who can’t see this would perfer if we had to all kick in to support the site ?

Martin, My apologies if I implied you or Lumberjocks would spam. I believe that you are an honorable person. A while back, I filled out demographic questionair (“with no personal info”) before, just to have a rush of spam, and even people calling me to sell me something. Fluke? Maybe. I would prefer not to confirm my suspicions…

The survey is not asking any sensitive privacy questions and is voluntary so you can decide whether to participate or not.

rtb, thank you for the personal view of internet marketing, even if it is dead wrong. You may want to educate yourself to the ways of internet marketing and electronic tracking. Paranoid? no, I don’t think so. I just choose not to be bothered by people who have a a limited scope of my personal traits, that feel empowered to sell me somthing over the phone while I wish to have dinner with my family. Another note… If paranoia was an issue, I guess I should not use my real name… I guess I could use rtb… Nope, someone beat me to it.

As far as ads, I have no problem with ads——I do however, detest those ads that move and shake and get your attention only by being annoying. So no animation would be my vote.

nothing wrong with a little “paranoia” when it comes to the internet. There are a lot of tricks out there you don’t learn about until it is too late.

I appreciate all the above discussion so that I can make “more knowledgeable” decisions about what I respond to.
