Enhanced Picture Viewer

Blog entry by Martin Sojka posted 424 days ago 356 reads 0 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites

As Bill noticed I have upgraded our picture viewer. Problem with the prev and next buttons was that they were not always on the same place and you had to hover the image to see them. To enhance the usability I’ve moved these two buttons together with the close button to the new separate toolbar at the top of the page.

Enjoy!

Well done Martin. This is a nice update, and I think the pictures seem bigger now too.

Martin,

I think that this is a great new feature. However, I am noticing today that it seems intermittent whether I see the new upgraded viewer or I just see the picture in a simple browser window requiring me to click back to get back to the post. Not sure if it is just on my end. By the way, I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.7

Nice…It would be great if you could enhance the max allowable image size of pictures placed in the body of the text to at least 800×600. 640×480 just dosnt have the resolution detail. Thanks for the toolbar upgrade

Mark, the picture viewer is activated only when the page is fully loaded (green progress bar at the bottom of Firefox window). I will try to update in the future.. no luck so far ;)

Brad.. I agree that it would be better. We had 500px wide content area few months ago but then I introduced this new design with 640px wide content area. 800px would add another 160px and the site would not fit into 1024×768 screen resolution – the most popular right now.

Mark, I’ve had the same problem, now and again, for a couple weeks now (prior to this change and again this morning).
I too am using Firefox.

I liked the old way… You only had to click on the left or right half of the picture for it to work. Any way of keeping that ability?

Great viewer. I also like the change.

Sometimes the ads are slow to load and it seems to link directly to the image.

The problem that Mark and Debbie refer to I’ve had with IE and I’ve noticed it for over a month.

But it is intermittant.

I just discovered your change today. I was going up & down the sides of the images with no luck, then notice the bar at the top. It’s a great upgrade, as usual.

Hey, the problem with late activation of the picture viewer is fixed now!!!

It is activated immediately after the thumbnails in the code.. no more waiting for the rest of the pages (including banners) to load woo hoo.. I’ve tested on Windows in FF and IE. Let me know if there is some problem on other platforms/browsers please.

You are doing an amazing job with the site, Martin.

I also suffer from the occasional random picture opening in a new page instead of a floating overlay window. I did notice it more often when clicking on the first picture of the series, be it a project or a workshop and with the page fully loaded. I am working in Safari 1.3.2, the last version for my OS X 10.3.9—in a couple of weeks I will try again how things work on Tiger and Safari 3.0.

I also agree with Markrules, even if the new layout is much nicer and clean, it’d be great to keep the old functionality of “picture halves”. I was used to neve look for the “PREV/NEXT/CLOSE” buttons but click on either half of the image or outside in the white zone and now I have to precisely position the cursor on top.

Anyway, I love LJ so much that I can’t really complain! Keep up the good work that enlighten our days, Martin.

Hi Martin,
I just discovered that by clicking on Right, or Left keys you can change pictures. This may be old hat to others, but I thought I’d mention it.

Markrules, Jojo… next/prev picture halves are back so now I think we have best of both worlds.

Thank you Martin, haven’t noticed before, I used to keep looking for the top buttons but now it’s much more comfortable. Sorry, I have to say this but… now the cherry on top would be the “click-anywhere-outside-the-picture-to-close”, as before! :o))))))))

OK, I know where is the exit, I was leaving anyway…

I posted somewhere else Martin. But it would be nice to have the next side of the picture, on the last picture, to be close.
