I am self-taught. I started in 2000, and got serious in 2003 about making a living from my work. I moved here to be an actor and had some success, but hated the business. I was supporting myself as a handyman and that's how I developed my skills that led me to this work. I almost cut my left hand off in 2003 just when I "got serious" about this as a living. I was beveling some pine on my table saw without a splitter and I got a nice dose of kickback. I cut 3 tendons and my main nerve. But I was able to make a full recovery and have full use of my hand. I drop things sometimes, but I am quite content with that, considering the alternative. If you are not using a splitter, please do!! Many great things are starting to happen business wise. I was invited to place my lamps in the McGuire Furniture showroom in San Francisco and possibly in New York if they do well in SF. I also do some really good art shows that I have found that have turned into some great commissions. I want to keep my output around 40 to 50 pieces a year and cap it off at less than 100. I have all the faith in my work and designs, so I have no doubt I will get there. Plus, I have a beautiful and incredibly supportive wife who has kept me believing in my furniture when it seemed no one else would. I don't mean to gloat, I am very fortunate and I hope my story compels someone else to believe in their abilities. Take care.

Very very nice work, the chair of course flows extremely well and the lines are a personal favorite. I checked out your site and have a couple comments. Number one, the photography is wonderful, really outstanding and number two, the cabinet that was created as wedding gift for your wife, that’s it, that’s what we do, that’s why we do it. If this piece and story were closer to the beginning of your site it would set the theme and tone for the remainder. You and I are relative newcomers to the lj site, personally I really enjoy it.
take care man,
harold
