That ongoing search for inexpensive lumber!!

Blog entry by matt garcia posted 73 days ago 445 reads 0 times favorited 15 comments Add to Favorites

Well I just got home from meeting a guy I met on craigslist today. He stated that he had some scrap Mahogany for sale that he inherited. I inquired what kind of mahogany it was, and he wasn’t sure. So after a phone call to make plans to meet, I was off. Well I met him at a gas station, and he had some great somewhat long, and wide Honduran Mahogany in the bed of his truck. I picked out a few choice pieces, and asked him what he wanted for them. He told me $30.00, so I took it. Just goes to show you that there are some great deals out there if you look for them, and manage to keep some mad money stashed away in your wallet!! Good luck to all in your ongoing hunt for inexpensive lumber!!

nice find. I keep looking, but haven’t found quite as good a deal. I paid about $1.50 a foot for the lumber in my blog, but you are definitely the big winner. I think I’m to the point now where I oftern prefer to see peoples lumber finds over new projects. LOL

I’ve become a big fan of Craigslist and found some good deals there. Just keep your eyes open and there’s value to be had. Good find.

Matt,

Nice score on the wood. You have some good looking mahogany to work with.

Sometimes we find the good deals. This past winter I answered an add in the paper and I got approx. 150 bd ft of white ash, white oak, and elm for $.40 a bd ft.

Wow, great find. I two or three years ago I went to an auction and bought the entire wood content of a shop for $200. among other things I got about 2000 BF of walnut, some as long as 14” and 8” wide. It is still out there if yo look.

That is such a great score. I would have paid even more for it and thought it was a good deal. But you got a GREAT deal!

Notice the board on the left in the trunk and how consistent the stripes are. This is often labeled as “ribbon mahogany” and is sold for a premium price. The last time I priced it out was 3 years ago at $18 – $20 per BF. I built my mahogany chandeliers from this type of mahogany.

If the pattern runs out at the sides and is not as consistent, then it is not considered to have the ribbon figure. The consistent ribbon figure indicates a more stable piece of lumber.

When the finish hits this wood it will be incredibly striking. The mahogany sofa table has a great example of this. There is no stain or pore filler involved here, just a pre-cat lacquer finish.
