Well…now that the garden bed and children’s area are complete we have begun phase three of our back yard makeover—-the deck behind the garage…
The purpose of the deck is to extend the one car garage…adding work space…but also it will cover a drain area because of some back yard flooding we are trying to fix…
We are making this as a simple 12×12 deck that will sit on top of cement piers thus making it a flooting deck…
The framing is made out of 2×6 treated lumber and the decking is going to be made out of 2×6 redwood…it was pricey (dont tell my wife)...but I think it will look much nicer than the green treated lumber that the original plan calls for…
Yesterday I started sinking the piers that go next to the garage…and then I have to trench out the area where the where the joist fits…these are the hardest since the ground is highest near the garage—-in order for the back doors of the garage to open I have to lower the deck enough to allow the door t to let it swing open…the only problem is that the garage has a cement “ramp” what comes out…so I have not decided how I will let the deck top meet it…
I can either keep the end of the deck even and leave a gap along the edge…or I can have the deck top go to the garage on the parts where there is no ramp and have the deck boards where the ramp is butt against it…
once we are framed up we can play with the deck top and see what it all looks like…in different configurations…
I will post more picts tonight…we hope to sink all the piers and MAYBE have the framing done…but now we are getting a late start…

Nice looking play set!
You are lucky with your piers. Here in south central PA, I had to dig down 36” for my footers- when we put in our deck!

Great start! I have always looked at those prefab piers and wished I could use them! Can’t float a deck here in new England..Like you Lew, I had to dig down 42” for my deck piers!..7 of them..that was fun!

Matt, when I see the stuff you’re doing, I’m reminded of all the projects I’ve undertaken over the years and just how much work they all involved. With that in mind, I’ve got just 2 things to say.
1) More power to ya!
2) I’m glad it’s not me doing that
You’ll have great satisfaction from all these projects if you don’t work yourself to death. Remember to step back and admire the work from time to time, it makes the project much more satisfying. -Tom
